Salisbury University Announces New President

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Salisbury chapter.

Salisbury University has announced the next university president as Dr. Charles Wight. Dr. Wight will take over for Dr. Dudley-Eshbach after her service of 18 years. If you’re like most people on campus you probably haven’t had the time to read the Q&A on Dr. Wight describing his experience, teaching style, and educational plans. Below I’ve listed the information that is the most relevant.

Dr. Wight earned his bachelors degree in chemistry at the University of Virginia and his Ph.D. at Caltech University. To date he has published more than 170 academic papers. Dr. Wight has served as president of Webster State University since 2013 and taught undergraduate classes, in addition to assuring the smooth running of the university. There’s no information yet on whether Dr. Wight plans to teach undergraduate classes here at Salisbury University.

Top achievements from Dr. Wight’s previous work includes leading a $164 million fundraising campaign, expanding need-based financial aid, creating the first LGBT Resource Center, and naming the first Chief Diversity Officer. Additionally, Dr. Wight was fundamental in opening a community education center in Ogden, Utah to help guide students of color through the application and financial aid process, ensuring their success.

Dr. Wight stated in his Q&A that the most enjoyable part of being a university administrator is “cultivating relationships, getting people excited about supporting students through their journey, and celebrating their many successes along the way.”

USM Chancellor Robert L. Caret noted that Dr. Wight’s “acumen in fundraising, growing student enrollment, and working seamlessly with state and private funding sources position him well to continue Salisbury University’s strong tradition of success.” I feel I speak for most of us on campus when we say we welcome Dr. Wight and wish him the best! Dr. Wight will begin serving as president of Salisbury University on July 1, 2018.
