Moving In and Out of College Dorm Rooms for the Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pace Pleasantville chapter.

Summer is right around the corner, which means it’s packing season. Do not under any circumstance throw your important belongings away because you don’t know what to do with them. That is exactly what I did last year and regretted it when I had to buy everything again. My first tip for you is to find out whether your college campus offers storage or locker rooms for their students. I know many people that have moved their things to a storage unit and paid monthly, to find out later that their college did have storage room available all this time.

Second of all, a few weeks before it’s time to move out, do a room clean out. Look for clothes in good condition that no longer fit and you no longer want, and donate it. I’m pretty sure that there are people that would love to take them. Grab a trash bag and start throwing away old papers, things that have expired, things that are broken, old candy just laying around and trust me you will find things that you had no idea were there in the first place. But all of these procedures will prevent you from freaking out the day before you are supposed to move out. It is Finals season on your last week, so starting ahead will make this process go smoother and much stress-free.

Look out for companies nearby of storage units that provide the service of coming to campus and lending you bins, and then they will pick it up the day you need to move out, and then they will bring it when you need to move in again. The best part of these companies that target college students is that they only charge a one-time fee for the service and time, instead of a month-to-month payment. The other benefit this has is that if you don’t have a car you don’t need to spend money on Ubers or ask your friends to drive you around to get you to this place, that transportation is part of the fee.

Make sure that you read reviews and know that they are trust worthy. Hurry up and sign up so you don’t stay without a spot at the storage rooms or units since everyone is reserving theirs during this time.

Put some music on, grab your bins and your belongings and let’s get packing!
