What I Learned During My 4 Years at UCSB

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

It feels like just yesterday I was unpacking my things and moving into Santa Catalina Hall — or “FT” I would later learn. Now I’m about 5 weeks away from graduating and I find myself reflecting on my experience here. The 4 years I’ve spent at UCSB have been unforgettable. Here are a few things I’ve learned:

You’re not always going to know what you want to do.

Whether it’s in regards to which class you should take or which major you should commit yourself to, or even where you want to live, there are many decisions to make and it’s not always easy. I came into UCSB thinking I would pursue a Biology major only realize that the English major was more fitting for me. Despite what people tend to think, it’s absolutely okay to not know what you want to do and it’s okay to change your mind during anytime through your college experience.

Professors aren’t scary.

Coming into college, I was always incredibly intimidated by my professors. I’m not exactly sure why; I think their education and status always appeared superior to me as a student. I quickly learned that professors are just people. They’re often understanding, kind and caring; it’s not hard to talk to them, even though I thought it would be.

It’s not hard to make friends.

I spent most of freshman year being very shy and afraid to talk to people. I’ve learned over the years that people are super friendly and always open to talking. Most people are going through similar experiences, so it’s easy to find something to talk about and relate to.

Time goes by REALLY fast.

I’m not sure if it’s because of the quarter system, but time seemed to really fly by. I didn’t expect graduation to come up so quickly. I wish I could go back and tell myself that; I would encourage my freshman self to do as much as possible.

Overall, I’m incredibly grateful for the time I’ve spent here, and I’m more grateful for the people I’ve had the chance to meet. UCSB , you have been great!

Hello! I'm Arianna, somtimes Ari, and I'm an English major at University of California, Santa Barbara. I'm one of the many editorial interns here at Her Campus UCSB. After graduating, I hope to work professionally in the editing business,.
Hi, Collegiettes! I'm Carmen, a Communication major at University of California, Santa Barbara and one of two Campus Correspondents for UCSB. I would love to one day work in either fashion, food, tech, financial services or philanthropy. My dream is to find a job that somehow combines several of those elements. Until I get there, I'll be munching on copious amounts of Trader Joe's dried mango, jamming out to my man, Frank Sinatra, and focusing on creating intriguing content! If you like my writing, talk to me. ;)
