HATS of CMU — The RSO on campus that works with Isabella County Humane Animal Treatment Society in order to prevent animal cruelty, promote proper animal care, and raise funds to improve the lives of all animals.
I had the pleasure of talking to the HATS of CMU Chapter Vice President, Brittany Barnhart.
What does HATS of CMU specifically do? What are some events you have done in the past?
We work with the Isabella County Animal Shelter (Humane Animal Treatment Society). We volunteer, donate, and fundraise to help them out. We also have socials for the members to interact and learn more about humane animal treatment. We promote ethical treatment of animals such as choosing adoption over buying from breeders, not bullying breeds, and awareness of the harmful effects of declawing and tail or ear docking.
What advice would you give to students who have pets in their house/apartment?
I would advise students to make sure this is a permanent choice. Having a pet is not a spur of the moment deal. You don’t get to just have them for a little bit and then want to get rid of them. You have to be committed to do all that you can to make sure the animal has the best life. They’re basically like having children. You have to take care of them and provide for them. It’s a lot of work and you should be committed before taking on that responsibility. I would also promote things mentioned in question 1. Don’t bully breeds because they have a bad reputation. Also do NOT take part in cosmetic transformations such as docking and declawing. These are basically for your own benefit and can be very harmful to the animals.
Why did you decide to join the HATS CMU chapter?
I joined HATS to get involved in the community and on campus. I love animals and I am a pre-vet student. This was the perfect way for me to get involved while gaining experience that will help me in vet school.
What can students do to become more involved with Animal Shelters around the area?
Students can sign up to volunteer at hatsweb.org. This includes an orientation, program/volunteer shirt fee, and helping out around the shelter. There are shifts for morning preparation, working in the feline kennels, and working in dog kennels. The shelter is always looking for donations, both monetary and supply based. Students can join the student chapter for more ways to fundraise and get involved as well!
