The 5 Games You Need to Buy

As we get closer to Christmas – or any month if you’re like me – we start to lean away from braving the cold, and closer to cosy nights in. Personally, I love a good board game. If I reach 50 and all I have to show for my life is a cupboard full of board games I don’t think that’s a bad thing, in fact, I think its brilliant. So I have decided to spread the joy of board games and give you my top picks for affordable games that will be sure to add a lightning bolt of fun to your life!

#1. Cards Against Humanity

We all know it, we all love it, so how could I possibly not start with it? That’s right, it’s Cards Against Humanity.

It’s also really easy to play, each round one player answers a question from a black card, and everyone else answers with their funniest white card(s), the best response wins the round!

This game is guaranteed to bring a ton of laughs to any occasion! Whether you’re sitting in the flat with your friends on a cosy night in, or you’re looking for something to do during pre’s, this game will always bring good times!

#2. Debatable

This game is a recent find for my flat, during the holidays I searched Amazon extensively for the best games to play and that’s when I discovered this little gem. After telling my flatmates about it, we were all agreed that this game had to be in our home forever. When we got the game, there were some doubts as to how much fun we’d have playing it so at our first board game night (hopefully the first of many) we decided to make it the first game on we played so that if we got bored we could move onto the classics. However, this ended up being the only game we played for a solid 3-4 hours. And I’m just going to come right out and say it, while it’s not the first on this list, it’s the first in my heart, and it is, without a doubt the greatest game I have ever played.

Each round someone takes on the role of the moderator, they select a question from one of the cards and pick two people to debate it. Those people get to choose two strategy cards to help them and then everyone else votes on who they think won. Before you get too concerned about the game becoming heated and starting fights, a timer comes with the game so each debate only lasts one minute and the strategy cards usually make it more fun. How can you start a fight when your opponent’s singing about their experience in the FBI? Plus, there are free entertainment and NSFW expansion packs online!

If this game doesn’t sound amazing to you, then you’re just going to have to take my word for it and buy it anyway!

#3. Cluedo

How do I even begin to explain my love for this game? This game was launched in 1944 and quickly became a classic, in 1985 a comedy film was released based on the game – if you haven’t seen this yet then you absolutely must. I have been obsessed with this game for as long as I can remember. Revolving around a “whodunit” murder, you have to solve the crime by rolling the dice and accusing (well, first you have to SUGGEST who the murderer is, when you know you accuse them) your fellow players. While the game itself doesn’t create laughs, it creates an atmosphere of real connection. You’ll find yourself talking to your friends for hours, getting to know them, laughing with them and making memories all while discovering that it was really Professor Plum in the Kitchen with the Rope!

#4. Monopoly

How can I not mention the game that has single-handedly destroyed more relationships than built hotels? That’s right! It’s Monopoly!

Before playing this game, always make sure that your friendships are strong – it’s difficult to get someone to forgive you for bankrupting them if you don’t know all their secrets.  This game is a classic, every household in the country knows what this game is, and every single one of them gets anxiety just thinking about the game! But when the board is out, and everyone has picked their tokens, excitement starts to fill the air, anticipation, and planning sweeps the room, and people’s dark sides come out….

This game will guarantee you will have a great night, people might yell and fight, but they’ll also make up and laugh more than before. This game is the only time when bankruptcy isn’t considered bad, unless of course, you are the one to go bankrupt, in which case get ready to spend the rest of the evening on a strop on the couch until you see your best friends about to sweep the board and knock everyone off, when you will become the biggest cheerleader and excitement will dawn upon you once again.

#5. Obama Llama

First of all, this game needs 4 players, it is a team sport, and levels of fun will dwindle with anything less than 4. But once you’ve got your teams sorted, get ready! This game relies on rhyming, you either have to act it, describe it or solve it so that your team can win the most points and the game! Essentially it is charades but better! When you have to describe the rhyme, say a riddle, or act out a scene for your team you will quickly start to feel ridiculous and laugh at the fact that your opponents appear to be floundering over a rhyme you guessed 5 minutes ago.

While there are many more games you should buy (and if you ask me about them, I will give you a detailed list), I would argue that these are 5 of the best games you could and should own. Since getting these games in my flat, I feel I am reaching my true potential as the crazy board game lady. So if you want to have a great time with your friends, but don’t feel like going to a club, then I guarantee that these games won’t steer you wrong!
