The interview. Whether it’s for a job, an internship, or even a volunteer opportunity, it’s a daunting sentence in itself. For some, the very thought of an interview could stir up feelings of stress and anxiety. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. Here are some tips to help you shine at your next interview:

1. Prepare in advance! This could be as simple as looking up common interview questions and preparing your answers for them. Or it could be doing your research on the place you are seeking any form of employment.

2. Dress appropriately! This means trading in the ripped jeans for something more along the lines of tasteful pant suits, etc. It also means actually ironing your clothes when necessary. However, this doesn’t mean that you should wear something you absolutely hate. You can create your own appropriate professional style and be confident as you walk into the interview room!

3. Know your strengths and weaknesses! Many aren’t prepared for this question and therefore, don’t answer in the best way when asked in the interview. Especially when talking about a weakness. Avoid stating a typical weakness such as the dreaded, “sometimes I work too hard,” and try to be more genuine with you answer.

4. Have your resume looked over! This applies to the first tip. Be prepared for the interview in advance. A resume is essential for any interview. It’s good to have your resume looked over by a career counselor.

5. Have a firm handshake! This is actually really important. No employer likes a wimpy handshake!
