How To Become Closer To Your Inner Carrie Bradshaw

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Law U chapter.

It seems rather odd that I am finally just seeing this movie at age 19. Sex and the City is a story that narrates dreams I have held so close to my heart ever since I turned 10 years old. For this past decade, I have obsessed over this vision I have for myself. I couldn’t wait to graduate from high school and become more like the young, successful, fashionable, late 20’s or 30 year old Molli Morris gracing the streets of New York City on her way to a very elite job. This vision I had of myself not only kept my passion of the arts in tact, but it’s truly what carried me through what seemed to be the longest years of my life in a stuffy all girls school. Sex and the City portrays an idealistic vision of a female writer who, somehow with close to a minimum wage job, is able to hold down an apartment looking over Central Park and everything designer. While managing her career, she balances time with her fiancé and the many five star lunch outings with her three best girlfriends. Sex and the City also illustrates a dream that so many young women would bend over backwards to attain.  In honor of the life of Carrie Bradshaw, which is a dream to so many young women, here are a few ways you can reenact this lifestyle on our very own campus.

Step 1:

One of the very most important aspects of Carrie Bradshaw’s life is her closet. Ever since the show premiered in 1988 and the movie in 2004, Carrie Bradshaw is known for her statement pieces. From every designer anyone could ever dream of, Carrie Bradshaw graces us with beautiful over-the-top ensembles. One way to achieve her look while at college, specifically at SLU, is of course by online shopping. As we all know, shopping in Canton, NY is very limited. And when I say limited, I mean literally packing your bag and leaving the country to shop in Canada or driving to the closest mall in either Syracuse or Watertown. Online shopping is achievable for everyone on a campus, and checking for discounts is easy when looking for the perfect additions to your closet.

Step 2:

Up next would have to be the food scene in Sex and the City. As discussed in many of my  previous articles, food is something that St. Lawrence seems to struggle with. Rather than a five star brunch in Manhattan, maybe you could treat yourself to a Pub 56 meal with your closest friends. However, if you go into town or even travel to Potsdam, you can find Between the Buns, Sergies, Little Italy, and so many more. Also, Five Guys just opened up in Potsdam and sometimes a milkshake is all you need before a homework filled night. Creativity is key towards our culinary adventures at SLU, so don’t confine yourself to your usual Pub dinner.

Step 3:

Finally, the entire point of Sex and the City is the chronicles of four woman’s love lives. College often arouses a lot of complexities that can prohibit these perfect relationships from forming. One way to become slightly closer to your inner Carrie Bradshaw is by either making a statement and wearing your most extravagant outfit to the Ticker one of these Saturday nights, or asking your crush to a Sunday Bagelry breakfast one weekend. It couldn’t’t hurt! This Carrie Bradshaw attitude would alleviate any anxiety surrounding this bold move so why don’t you? Remember, not a single sole at St. Lawrence is Carrie Bradshaw, but no one else is you, so use these four years to make a statement.

Obviously, Canton isn’t even close to Manhattan, and it’s of course a little bit more complicated to have a Carrie Bradshaw lifestyle on a college campus. However, life is what you make it, so it is very possible to recreate Sex and the City in Canton, NY!

Hey! My name is Molli Morris and I am a studio art major at St. Lawrence University.
