Kayen is one of our newest members at Her Campus York U! I asked her a few questions about her favourite foods, what she would like to do with her program, as well as what an important issue is that she would like society to work on.

Describe yourself in 3 words: weird, awkward, and kind
What weird food combinations do you really enjoy?
Hummus and French fries. I know it is weird, but think of it this way, you’re swapping ketchup out for something that is relatively healthier! Also, I just really love hummus, it tastes amazing and it is pure love and joy.
Which social stigma does society need to overcome?
The stigma of having a mental illness, especially since I realized not quite that long ago that I also suffer from one. Although there is a lot of recognition and movement to try to move past the stigmatization, there is still a lot of it out there.

Who was your craziest / most interesting teacher?
My craziest teacher would have to be my teacher in grade 5, shoutout to you Mr. Cornwall! Anyways, he was an angry guy and one day, someone was talking while he was teaching, and he was not happy about that. He grabbed a chair and threw it against the wall, and that left us all scared and we never dared to talk or interrupt the guy ever again. I heard after that, he got suspended from teaching but then returned better than before. I guess people can change.
If you were given a PhD degree, but had no more knowledge of the subject of the degree besides what you have now, what degree would you want to be given to you?
Social work degree. It’s been my dream to be a social worker ever since I was in high school, and I know that’s the field I really want to be in. But, because of life, I was not able to pursue social work and I had to change paths to law. I am hoping that after I am done with my program, I can use my degree to get back into social work!
Which TV show character would it be the most fun to change places with for a week?
This is an old one, but definitely Alex from Wizards of Waverly Place. Not only is she outgoing, but she’s a wizard. With powers, everything is magical. What’s not to love?
I love being part of Her Campus because I get to meet beautiful and unique individuals like Kayen. She expressed how important it is to her for society to get over the mental health stigma and why it is important for her to achieve her dreams. Her fun sense of humour is what makes the world a better place.
