Hello Anxiety, Lets be Friends Today

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJC chapter.

You feel as though you’re drowning, you can’t keep your head above water, you’re swimming and treading but can’t seem to overcome the battle — it’s going to be O.K. Anxiety, a common life stressor takes control of so many of us; it doesn’t have to. It’s all about how you handle it. Whether it be today’s life stressors or a huge exam coming up, you CAN and will do it. Anxiety has taken over me before, and many of my close friends. Life isn’t easy all the time, but don’t allow this little obstacle to stop you from how amazing your life is. Your life is amazing, the grass is greener.

Here are some ways I’ve learned to overcome my anxiety and love every moment of life, even with it sitting on my shoulder; my little demon as I like to call it.

Talk to someone!

There is nothing wrong with needing a little help and support on the days you just can’t seem to stay afloat. Talk to your school counselor, your mom, dad, best friend, maybe even coach or professor. Your support system might be just what you need to get you out of the funk.

Exercise, Read, Journal

Ranging from a beautiful day, to one of those “I’m never leaving this bed” kind of days. BE ACTIVE. Get your mind off of the life stressors. Go for a run, a bike ride, maybe a swim! If this isn’t you, pick up a good book and read a chapter, immerse yourself in something else. Do what I’m doing right now; journal. Write down how your feeling and close it up, or make a statement to help others.

Make a day for you and a friend!

Grab a friend and go for a ride, check out the mall, go to a sporting event chase a sunset, grab an ice cream. It really is the little things in life.

Prayer.

You don’t have to be religious to do this. Pray to whoever it is that you do believe in. Personally, I pray to my grandfather, god, and recently use a prayer that my dad showed me. You don’t need a bible, or to be on your knees, just cross your fingers and pray to that person.

— don’t knock it until you try it.

So, hello Anxiety, let’s be friends today. Take on your battle and live life. Hold on for dear life; life is crazy but you are greater than today’s stressors.

“May the best of your todays be the worst of your tomorrows.”
