What I Wish My High School Senior Self Knew About College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryn Mawr chapter.

At Bryn Mawr, we’ve been seeing more and more accepted students on campus in these past few weeks. It always makes me smile to see these high school seniors and their family taking in the scenery and imaging themselves at the school I’ve come to call home.

As college decision day for most schools approaches (Wednesday, May 1), we asked a few of our writers to share their advice for picking the school that’s right for you, as well as their advice for starting off on the right foot once you get there.

ANONYMOUS: My favorite high school English teacher said that to truly know where you want to go to college, you need to visit the campus in the spring and in the winter. In the spring, the campus is at its most beautiful; in the winter, the campus is at its worst. You should see both sides of the school because the tours will only show you the best.

Maria Bohan ‘21: Name recognition isn’t the most important thing to consider when choosing a school. In fact, if you’re not going to an Ivy or big sports school, chances are very few people are going to know where you go, anyway. You need to choose the school that’s right for you, not everybody else.

Christine Huang, ‘20: During your very first semester, take the time to discover your passions both in and out of the classroom! Take introductory courses in fields you never considered before; take a leap of faith and go to some extracurricular activities that you’ve never tried. You may end up leaving some behind, but it’s all part of the exploration process. This takes some courage, but it’s totally worth it.
