Do you remember what it was like to be a little kid? Well, what do you think it would be like for you to suddenly wake up a kid again? The movie “Little” takes us through that journey in a film filled with comedy and black girl magic! That being said here’s my take on the film.
If you’ve seen any of the various Freaky Friday movies or the Tom Hanks classic “Big,” you’ll definitely see some overlaps in “Little.” In fact, the 15-year-old producer and star of the film, Marsai Martin, directly says that she got the idea from Big, thinking it would be interesting to see it in reverse.
The movie follows a bossy CEO of a tech company named Jordan, of course, this bossy attitude doesn’t exactly paint her in the best light to those around her. She becomes widely disliked by everyone, including a little girl who “curses” her by wishing she was little again. The next morning, Jordan wakes up in the body of her younger self and is thrown back into the world at the bottom of the totem pole. This comes with some major attitude adjustments on her part that end up leading her to change her ways when she becomes an adult again.
Now that the general plot of the movie is out there, here are some of my honest opinions about the film. It was definitely a cute story, but I found it to be a bit lacking in a few areas. The start of the film was good, but it felt as if towards the middle and end of the film things began to slack off. There were also several scenes in the film I just felt were a bit unnecessary and drawn out. Not only because it lacked any real substance towards the storyline but also because if they were simply a bit much for a movie that had been painted in such a childlike light. I also thought that because the film took so much from movies like “Freaky Friday” and “Big” it was just a bit overused for a plotline or at least it could have been done in a more creative way.
My criticisms aside I loved that it showed so many actors, especially women of color. The film was much more diverse than any of its body switching predecessors and I absolutely loved that. I also really enjoyed that they had women in the lead role as well as in positions of power. The comedy of the film was also very funny pretty much throughout. Another major selling point was that a 15-year-old girl boss did it! I mean I don’t know about the rest of you, but when I was 15 I was nowhere near producing my own movie and making history as the youngest producer in Hollywood.
Keeping everything I’ve said in mind if you want to go out and support not only a truly talented young woman of color but, also want to have a cute film to watch with some fellow collegiettes, you may just want to keep this movie in mind.
