5 TedTalks You Need to Go Watch Right Now

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

Stop searching for your passion | Terri Trespicio:

If you’re like me, your parents probably told you at some point to “stop fooling around and find your passion.” For years I tried out activity after activity, wondering when I was going to find my passion, how this passion would manifest itself into a prosperous career, and what was wrong with me every time I came up short for an answer. Whitty, energetic, and truthful, Terri Trespicio delivers a ten minute TedTalk power-packed with reasons why you need to “stop searching for your passion,” and instead, get out and do more.

Notable quote: “just start doing, because to live your life full of meaning and value, you don’t follow passion, your passion follows you”

Girl Up: The Secrets to an Extraordinary Life | Courtney Ferrell:

Please watch this. If you take one thing away from my article, it’s this talk. Courtney Ferrell, an absolute firecracker and delight to watch on screen, styles this TedTalk by speaking directly to one of the young woman in the audience about all the ways in which she can manifest an Extraordinary Life for herself by “Girl[ing] Up.” Inspiring, candid, and eye-opening, I would be lying if I said I didn’t shed a few tears.

Notable quote: “You have to take other women along with you. You cannot see them as your rivals, they are not your rivals.”

Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health? | Bailey Parnell:

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: social media can be toxic. From the idealization of others lives, to the release of Dopamine (the chemical responsible for feelings of happiness and satisfaction) every time we get a like, to the ways in which we use it to harm others, social media can be a catalyst for self-destruction. In this informative, yet engaging and all-too-relatable talk, Bailey Parnell explores the many ways in which social media is detrimental to our mental health, and all the ways in which we can modify our behavior for the most healthy type of engagement possible.

Notable quote: “In social media WE are the product, and we are letting others attribute value to us”

Mindset is Everything | Cole Bennett:

Now I know you’re probably thinking (if you just clicked the link below) that 26 minutes is much too long to focus on one video for, but trust me, it’s worth it. Cole Bennett, the founder of Lyrical Lemonade, “a multi-faceted company that specializes in visual content, live events, high demand merchandise and more,” delivers an inspiring talk about how his positive “glass-half-full” mindset and work ethic led him to be the industry mogul he is today. Cole talks about how he started Lyrical Lemonade, his rise to success, and the tools he utilized to keep his mindset in the right space, not to mention the insane cast of artists he has and continues to work with on a daily basis (Lil Uzi Vert, Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa, Gucci Mane to name a few). Oh, and he does this all in Birkenstocks.

Notable quote: “I needed to tap in my mindset… It’s all about your mindset and how you think…I believe anybody can do it.”

Why I live a zero waste life | Lauren Singer:

Yup, you read that correctly. Zero. Freaking. Waste. If you’re as mind blown by those words as I was, then you’re going to want to watch this video. Lauren Singer, an Environmental Studies graduate from NYU, makes all her own products, carries only reusable bags and jars when shopping, and only shops second hand. Not to mention, she’s got the healthiest looking hair I’ve probably ever seen.

Notable quote: “I’m happier because, for the first time in my life, I’m living in direct alignment with my values”
