6 Reasons You Should Get a Dog

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Furman chapter.

College… arguably one of the most stressful times in one’s life. Let’s face it, college can be “ruff”, but it’s nothing a dog can’t fix! Here are six reasons as to why you should get a dog in college.

#1. Keep you active

After doing endless amounts of school work, the last thing I want to do is exercise. Dogs need to be walked regularly, which forces you to take breaks throughout the day. It’s a fun way to keep up with your health!

#2. Reduce stress and depression

Playing with a dog can help increase one’s serotonin and dopamine levels, which are responsible for making you feel calm and relaxed, reducing any tension and improving your mood.

#3. Improve your heart health

Staying active and reducing the amount of stress in your life, as mentioned above, leads to lower blood pressure which means an overall healthier heart. By getting a dog, you are simultaneously decreasing your risk for developing heart disease.

#4. Love you unconditionally

A dog’s love for their human is unconditional. It doesn’t matter if you just failed a test or got into a fight with your friend, your dog will always be there for you. This is the purest companionship on the face of this earth. Having a strong companionship can prevent some illness and even add years to your life!

#5. Instant vacuum cleaner

Us college students are the epitome of laziness. Don’t want to vacuum up the crumbs on your floor? Don’t worry, your dog will eat them for you.

#6. Improve your social life

Making new friends is always hard. If you’re feeling like branching out, a dog can help you do just that. It’s rare for fellow dog owners to not exchange words in passing whether that be on a walk, hike, dog park, or even at the pet store! Who knows, maybe your future BFF is only one isle over at Petco.

So, what are you waiting for?! There are plenty of dogs in need of a home who would love to be your best friend. If you’re looking for a place to adopt, Greenville County Animal Care and Greenville Humane Society are full of dogs waiting to find their forever homes!
