7 Things I’m Digging Right Now and So Should You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rhodes chapter.

Welcome to campus, Rhodents! Whether you are new to campus or not, here are a few things you should check out in Rhodes, Memphis, and the world.

Rhodes Exchange

I’m not kidding you, join this group on Facebook right NOW! Freshman, this group is where to get all the items of clothing you never thought you needed. This is where jobs get posted, people sell old clothes, and you can buy used textbooks. My friends and I have made a game out of commenting on posts and texting each other when we see something good. Needless to say, if you’ve been confused as to how to properly dress for a Rhodes party your best bet is to check out Rhodes Exchange. Fair warning though, you may get fully addicted to this Facebook group.

Lana’s New Album

I know what you’ll say, and yes the album is that good. Listening to Lana usually brings me back to my awkward, angsty teen self, but her new album is completely different. Everyone’s still talking about Lover so much that we forgot Lana is back and better than ever. I’ll link in the Pitchfork review about her album, it says what I want to say more eloquently so check it out. Her cover of “Doin’ Time”? Honestly amazing. If you can’t listen to all of it, give “Cinnamon Girl” a listen.

The New Rat

This one is pretty self-explanatory. The new rat and its dessert table are poppin.

Casablancas

My roommate introduced me to Casablancas last year. If you are new to Memphis go try this restaurant if you enjoy Mediterranean food. They have the best hummus and grape leaves. You cannot order something that is not delicious here. The ambience is a nice change from the hustle and bustle of the Rat we all love, yet also hate sometimes. It is a great place to go with friends and take a load off from that busy week we all just had.

Darties

Recently I’ve become a Darty convert. Parties are more fun when you can see everyone you are talking to. It may be hot, but you always get better photos with your friends. Also, check out the tailgates; school spirit can be fun when it comes in appropriate quantities. I never really went out to any of the darties or tailgates as a freshman, but I now see my big mistake. Don’t have any college regrets Rhodents. From me to you, go check out the darties.

Hemingway Editor

As my professor said last week, it’s that time of year. Papers are due and no one has any time to edit. Hemingway Editor is a website that you can copy your paper in and will tell you what sentences are too lengthy and need to be cut down. It will also highlight words that are redundant or tell you to replace a word with something more forceful. Professors do not like passive voice and Hemingway editor shows you where every passive voice use is. Sadly it can’t make your writing as good as Ernest Hemingway’s, but your professors will be eternally grateful to have a more concise paper in front of them.

Schnitt Talks

My friend Olivia recommended this podcast a few weeks ago, and I haven’t been able to stop listening to it. It is on Spotify through Barstool, which may sound sketch but it is worth a listen. Ellie Schnitt is truthful, funny, and mean like the older sister you never had. She has great advice for navigating life in college and honestly just how to deal with being a woman in your teens or twenties. I try to listen every morning and it always preps me for the day ahead.
