How to Spend Valentine’s Day Alone (Introvert Edition)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wells chapter.

Before I get started, I have to be clear about two things. Yes, Valentine’s Day has been one of my favorite holidays, but does that mean I’ve always celebrated it with a significant other? Nah.

To me, Valentine’s Day has always been that holiday after my birthday which helps me recognize the love I have for the people in my life. But I know it’s not that easy. Sometimes Valentine’s Day can be a reminder of something you wish you had or have never experienced. Trust me, I get you. I’m here for you. As an introverted person, it can be a little harder to want to do something on Valentine’s Day without having to put yourself out there (i.e. dating) or spend time with a large group of friends.

That is why I have gathered a list of ideas for what you (and your introverted soul) could do on Valentine’s Day.

Visit a comfort place

Most introverts enjoy staying home, right? But sometimes you need to get out and remember there’s a world outside of your computer screen. As an introvert who gets overwhelmed by large, crowded places… My idea of going out is visiting a place that comforts me. Usually, these places consist of Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, and Target’s $1-$3 section. Find your place and go enjoy it.

Smell books

If you picked Barnes and Noble as one of your comfort places, this is a great way to start. I don’t know about you but I LOVE smelling books (idk man, I just do). Not used books with potential boogers inside the sleeve cover, but new books with scents of their own.

Surrounding yourself with things that ground you and make you appreciate life is so important. I think Valentine’s Day is a perfect time to treat yourself to the little things you enjoy (even if it makes you look a little bit insane).

Cuddles

Whether it’s with a fur baby, random friend, or stuffed monkey you got for your 9th birthday, cuddling is so nice. Grab that fluffy blanket. Grab those cozy socks. Get comfy.

Spend time with someone who matters

It could be a sibling, an old friend, your professor, anyone who makes your life BETTER. A simple one-on-one connection with an important figure in your life is so much better than getting trampled on in a club.

MAKE ART

Being able to get creative energizes me more than coffee. And when I am able to actually sit down and make something, it feels so rewarding. So, try rewarding yourself with some quality You Time™. Making art is a great way to relax and connect with yourself while getting a little messy. It’s nice to get messy now and then.

Appreciate yourself

Take a minute to reflect and realize that you’ve come such a long way. Be proud of yourself, baby. You are doing so much, and now is a perfect time to recognize all the amazing things you’ve accomplished (no matter how big or small they are).

Be selfish and do the things you enjoy doing this Valentine’s Day. Love the people around you, but most importantly… Love yourself.
