In the middle of the week – Wednesday 12, to be more exactly – but right in time to show some teenager love on the week of Valentines, To All The Boys I Loved Before PS: I Still Love You streams on Netflix all over the world. In this sequence of one of the most popular movies ever produced by the company, there is a lot of fun, romance, learning and of course, a love triangle to put Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo) out of the comfortable zone and face some competition.
The surprise of this second movie is for sure its loyalty to the Jenny Han’s book. Although some things got changed in the first film, the script found a form to show what the readers wanted to see on screen: the athlete Peter K. being challenged by an old romance, and at some point of the movie you can really overthink if the Noah´s character is the right guy to the perfect Lara Jean (Lana Condor).
You may not shipp the teenager girl with John Ambrose (Jordan Fisher) right now, but the charism, intelligence and piano’s ability of the biggest Lara Jean’s childhood crush will get you. Peter might be her first real romance, but the history that she had with John Ambrose can make our girl face a real trouble.
Putting the conflict a little bit aside, must be said that PS I Still Love You focus on Lana Condor’s character. Of course that she has to deal with all the conflict in her love life, but the movie is also about the growth of a teenager girl who stopped to imagine what would be like to have a boyfriend and start going to (real) dates. Being in a relationship is not always about great demonstrations of love, but also deal with problems that put your feelings in doubt. Lara Jean learn in the development of the movie that love is scary, but she needs to take the risk to feel it appropriately.
As the trailers showed, the outfits and photography are breathtaking, and the most loved character of the first movie got her scenes just perfect as before: is impossible to do not love the empowered little sister Kitty Covey (Anna Cathcart).
The new members of the cast also bring their personality to the sequence, Jordan Fisher may not be similar to the memory showed in the previous movie, but added some important representativeness to a film that had already broke the rules of cinema’s xenophobic industry working with a Vietnamese actress in the protagonist role. And to add even more asian actors, Ross Butler is also in the movie playing the Peter’s best friend, Trevor. Another important addition was Holland Taylor, the perfect woman to play a daring person like Stormy, the character responsible to make Lara Jean feel that she is allowed to discover new things.
Another surprise is that this movie is not all about Valentine. The work of the original writer, Jenny Han, with the screenwriters Sofia Alvarez and J. Mills Goodloe made possible the add of new themes, like women’s right to control when to have sex or not with their partners, and also female sorority.
