How to Keep Your Skin Flawless and Hydrated During This Pandemic

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Purdue chapter.

I don’t know about you but having to wear a mask everyday is taking a toll on my skin. Even though it is extremely important to wear a mask during this time in order to keep ourselves healthy and protected, it has started to make me develop “maskne.” Maskne is essentially defined as acne that is caused from the buildup of oils and sweat underneath our masks. With the constant hot air that is emitted from us talking and being trapped in the mask, it makes sense that it would start to cause a few blemishes and irritation. Here are some tips to help keep your skin protected!

Buy the correct mask

The first tip is to make sure you are buying the correct mask. Be sure to pick a cotton mask, as it will be more comfortable and less likely to irritate your skin.

Cut back on the makeup (I know it’s hard!)

Secondly, be sure that you are minimizing the amount of makeup that you are wearing. The beauty of this pandemic and the mask requirement is that no one can see your face. Over half of your face will be covered by your mask, so be sure that you aren’t putting a heavy layer of makeup on. Having a lot of makeup on the part of your face that will be covered up by the mask, will only lead to even more clogged pores. This makes it more likely for you to develop maskne.

Stay true to your skincare routine

Lastly, and most important, develop a good skincare routine and stick to it. Now more than ever, it is crucial to pay attention to your skin and take care of it. Remember to keep your skin hydrated by moisturizing. Another great tip is to treat your face like you do your hands. We have been religiously washing our hands to wash away any particles that may be stuck on them. Approach your skin in the same way. Your face is also exposed to those same particles throughout the day, so be sure to clean it!

Stay safe, ladies!
