All big artists start out small. They have a dream to make it big in the music and share their art with the rest of the world. They all have the vision of standing on the stage at the Grammy’s, The Billboard Music Awards, The American Music Awards, The iHeart Music Awards and more. Emerging new artists may not get the same amount of attention, but they are still a force to be reckoned with. Many people have that one artist that they have been following, so when their beloved artist gets big, they get bragging rights and get to gloat that they are the superior fan. Britney Lee is that artist for me.

Lee is a young 19-year-old artist from Fairfax, Virginia. She is based in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area and has released music that is locally produced. Her biggest show so far was done at Union Stage to promote the release of her first EP. She was formally the lead singer of a heavy metal band during her high school days before pulling a Gwen Stefani and going solo to release more EDM style songs that parallel to the songs being played on the radio right now. She writes her own lyrics and has released “Gemini,” an EP, and other songs that have been released as singles.

Gemini” is wonderfully written and produced, a true masterpiece. It reflects the music that is currently played on the radio and is popular right now. The lead song that has the same title as the EP plays off the astrological sign, “Gemini,” and the duality of a person in a relationship. I love the line, ‘I want to be your heaven babe / and I love to bring you hell,’ because it showcases how someone in a relationship can have an intention to love and comfort you but also keep you on edge and keep things exciting. Lee may also be talking about literal hell and making your life miserable in a relationship, but I prefer my positive spin on the lyric. The rest of the songs are a mix of different styles. “Legend” is a bad*ss anthem that makes you feel so powerful, “Cherries” is a feel-good song that talks about a person who is missing out on you and your love and “Diamond” is another radio-level song that needs more recognition, especially for Lee’s powerful vocals in the chorus.

She has also released “Paradise” ahead of her EP. “Paradise” is an EDM-pop song that talks about the excitement of being in a relationship and growing as a person both in and outside the relationship. Lee produced this song with a simple piano and a cappella vocals at the beginning with the addition of drums and a low bass line at the first chorus. I love the build-up of the song and the explosion in the second half of the song. The slow progression of the song really reflects how relationships develop with a burst of strong feelings. This is a song that belongs on the radio and every single Spotify playlist that is about relationships.

Perhaps my favorite song of hers is “Parties.” With this song, Lee turns away from a strong EDM style to an alternative with a small touch of pop. She sings about the feeling of loneliness and mistakes that are related to partying. She feels out of place at a party that she is brought to and is more focused on her own thoughts and voices in her head. The song is just so groovy to listen to, and the bridge where Lee showcases her powerful vocals and runs is the part of the song that I love so much. Her layered vocals, at the end, give the song extra power and sound so satisfying. I am also so obsessed with the music video. It is so professionaly done and the editing is phenomenal.

I started listening to Britney Lee and never stopped. She has songs of every type of mood you want to be in. She has such incredible lyrics and vocals that you can get addicted. I can’t wait for her to get to the Grammy’s and brag that I have been with her since the very beginning. Watch out for Britney Lee because she is only going up from here.
