3 Not-So-Basic Spooky Movies to Enjoy This October (Or All Year Long)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

October is one of my favorite times of the year, from the pumpkin patches to DIY costumes, sweet treats, and of course, iconic Halloween flicks (Halloweentown, anyone?). But this holiday season, I found myself bored of the same old reruns of The Corpse Bride, Hocus Pocus, and The Addams Family. I know for myself and others Halloween doesn’t feel the same this year…you know, since our every day realities have become scarier than All Hallow’s Eve. So, I scoured far and wide to bring you three more movies to binge-watch to bring your ~spooky vibes~ back from the grave.

Death Becomes Her (1992)

Dive into this cult classic featuring a young Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, and Bruce Willis! In this black comedy, when journalist (Hawn) visits an old friend and successful actress (Streep) she finds her relationship doomed as her fiancé falls for the movie star, which sends her into a deep depression and enters into a psychiatric facility. Seven years later, Helen Sharp (Hawn) returns looking ethereal, and plans to seek revenge on the couple. Madeline Ashton (Streep), wonders how Helen stayed so youthful, and later finds she drank a potion promising eternal youth and beauty. Madeline soon follows Helen’s lead, and the two discover there is a great price to pay for immortality.

Where to watch: Hulu, Amazon Prime, HBO Max

The Witches (1990)

Based on the 1983 novel, The Witches follows a young boy named Luke Eveshim. Luke, while on vacation with his grandmother, learns about evil witches who pose as ordinary women to lure and kill children. Years later, when his grandmother falls ill they decide to spend the summer by the sea at a hotel. There, Luke discovers a coven of witches posing as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and their master plan to turn all children into mice. When the witches catch Luke and his friend, Luke escapes and finds his grandmother. Now tasked with saving the world, Luke and his grandmother devise a plan to stop the evil witches and save all children.

Where to watch: Netflix, Amazon Prime, Youtube

The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020)

Sequel to the 2017 film The Babysitter continues the story of Cole Johnson, a junior in high school, struggling in his home and social life as no one believes his babysitter and her satanic cult tried to kill him in a blood ritual two years prior. To escape the psychiatric ward his parents enrolled him in, Cole joins a weekend trip to the lake with his best friend Melanie, her boyfriend, and friends. There Cole is once again forced to fight for his life as old and new demons hunt him.

*Warning: This is one of those “this is the best and worst thing I have ever seen” movies

Where to watch: Netflix

Happy binging, my ghoulfriends! (Sorry, I had to).

Hello, I'm McKenna Garcia! I am a senior at the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Public Health. I am also currently the Co-Social Media Director for my chapter of Her Campus and loving every minute of it! In my free time I enjoy hanging out with my friends, dancing around to harry styles, and playing with my puppy.
Hi, I'm Madeline Muschalik! This is my fourth year in Her Campus; I wrote for Her Campus at Wake Forest University before transferring to UT in fall 2019. Last year I was the Her Campus Texas Co-President and Campus Correspondent & it was so rewarding. I am excited to explore Austin and learn more about our university through Texas Her Campus. Some of my hobbies include running, reading, yoga, and traveling! I am a Public Relations Major and with a minor in Entrepreneurship and certificate in Creative Writing. Outside of Her Campus I am involved in Texas American Marketing Association, Moody Communication Council, a member of the Kendra Scott WEL Institute Student Council, Texas Kappa Delta, and I am a Transfer Year Interest Group (TRIG) mentor. I love UT & all the amazing opportunities (like Her Campus) that it has to offer!
