My Favorite ‘90s Fashion Trends Are Back and Better Than Ever

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

The ‘90s was undeniably the most iconic decade for fashion. I often find myself looking for fashion inspiration from ‘90s figures like Princess Diana, Jennifer Aniston and Alicia Silverstone. As we all know, history has a habit of repeating itself, so I can’t say I’m surprised to see that these ‘90s trends are making their way back into the modern wardrobe — but I’m very happy about it. I’ve rounded up five of my favorite ‘90s comeback trends that everyone needs in their wardrobe.

Shoulder Bags

It’s time to store away the oversized tote bag and make way for the iconic small shoulder bag. Tucked under your arm, these bags are stylish and the perfect size for carrying daily essentials like your phone, lipstick and keys. They also come in so many different shapes, colors and patterns, making it easy for anyone to rock this trend, no matter your style or aesthetic.

Chunky Sneakers

Famously worn by Princess Diana in the ‘90s, the classic chunky sneaker (AKA the “dad shoe”) is back, and I’m not mad about it. A pair of chunky sneakers not only provides style and versatility, but they’re also so comfortable! They fit perfectly into our crazy college lifestyles. Plus, they couldn’t be easier to find! From Walmart and Nike to my personal favorite, New Balance, the “dad shoe” is accessible through tons of brands and price ranges.

Loose-fitting Denim

Jean shopping? Hated it. Wearing jeans? Dreaded it. It wasn’t until I impulsively purchased my first pair of loose-fitting denim that I began to love wearing jeans. The oversized denim look is comfortable, chic and flattering. What more can you ask for? They’re also roomier in the hips and legs but fit the waist like normal jeans, making them perfect for all my curvier girls. Comfort meets style is the new 2020 motto. So, if you haven’t hopped on the loose-fitting denim trend, this is your sign! Swap out one of your skinny jeans for a pair of baggy, puddle or straight leg jeans. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

Platform Everything

Platform footwear dominated the ‘90s. From flipflops and boots to sneakers and mules, you could literally add a platform to the bottom of any footwear and rock it in the ‘90s. Fast forward 30 years, and the iconic platform is back and better than ever. I’m personally loving this trend and have been slowly adding more and more platforms to my wardrobe. Pairing this type of footwear with any outfit can take your look to a whole new level. So, if you haven’t already, I highly recommend adding some platform footwear into your wardrobe!

Slip Dresses

The iconic slip dress is making its way into the modern wardrobe this year and I’m loving it. The slip dress is arguably one of the most versatile pieces of clothing in any closet right now. You can wear it as-is for a classic look, or throw on an oversized sweater and some booties for the perfect fall outfit. You can even layer it over a basic white tee and sneakers for a casual OOTD. It can be incorporated into every season, making it the ultimate staple piece you need in your everyday wardrobe.

So, there you have it! Some of my favorite ‘90s fashion trends are back and better than ever. Be sure to add some of these iconic pieces to your wardrobe. You’re going to rock them!
