“Hi, I’m Chandler, and I make jokes when I’m uncomfortable” — this quote, spoken by our beloved Chandler Bing in Friends, could just as easily describe Matthew Perry as it did his most famous character.
Mr. Bing, known as the primary comic relief of the iconic sitcom, always knew how to turn a bad situation into a funny one with his signature sarcasm and irony. His scenes almost always ended in laughter, even when the character himself was navigating deep emotional struggles.
The Parallel Between Art and Life
The striking thing is how much Matthew Perry had in common with Chandler. The actor was constantly chasing something in his life: fame, happiness, love, or a family. He battled severe alcoholism and opioid addiction throughout major periods of his life — including the peak years of filming Friends — but still, he persistently used humor to ease the pain.
The new Netflix three-part documentary series “The One About Matthew Perry”, which cleverly nods to the signature naming convention of Friends episodes, released on October 27. The series explores Matthew’s trajectory, from his childhood longing for fame to his tragic passing on October 28, 2023.
Beyong the laugh tracks
In the trailer, Matthew recalls praying: “God, you can do anything you want to me. Just please make me famous,” and that’s where the story begins. Based on his 2022 autobiography, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir, as well as testimonies from people who were close to him, Netflix offers an intimate look at the vulnerable man behind Chandler Bing — exposing how the laugh tracks hid a relentless battle with loneliness and internal turmoil.
The presence of close friends and family makes the story even more authentic. Personal statements from those who truly loved him at his lowest points, alongside unreleased audio excerpts and never-before-seen footage, are what make this production stand out. So, if you’ve read his memoir and think there’s nothing left to discover, you might be pleasantly surprised.
A Legacy Beyond Chandler Bing
By honoring both an actor who defined a generation and the complex human behind the role, the docuseries pays tribute to Perry exactly as he wished to be remembered. Our beloved Matthew left behind a legacy that went far beyond Chandler Bing.
Through his book and his willingness to speak openly about his struggles with addiction, he helped others understand the realities of substance abuse and showed those facing similar battles that they were not alone. He believed in using his experiences to help people find their way toward recovery, and he dedicated part of his life to supporting those struggling with addiction. His story reminds us that behind the laughter was a man who wanted to make a difference. Perhaps his greatest legacy is not only the joy he brought to millions, but also the hope he left for those who needed it most.
Mr. Perry’s story was both inspiring and chaotic. Ironically, I’ve always thought it would make a great series. Well, now it finally is.
