Being Welcomed into the Sisterhood

As a new member of Kappa Delta (KD), I was so excited to experience sisterhood and philanthropy that came in a sorority. From introducing myself to so many sisters, to participating in sorority events, there was so much I have learned from the Theta Rho chapter.Even better  However, there is was a tradition that new members get to participate in attend with the initiated sisters. This is called Big-Little. I’ve seen many Instagram reels and Tiktok videos of sisters giving baskets filled with goods and sorority merchandise to the new members. I was so excited, I couldn’t wait to experience one myself.

Thinking of Joining a Sorority? Here is Everything You Need to Know!

For those who are confused about Big-Little, it’s a Greek Life tradition where a new member (Little) gets paired with an initiated member (Big). A Big is supposed to be your older sister, a mentor, a support system, and best friend. I was so excited to receive a basket each day until the reveal day which made me nervous.

Day by day, there were 3 baskets. The first basket consisted of a shirt, a lot of skincare, 2 monster energy drinks, and makeup. The second basket consisted of 2 more shirts, a KD wooden plaque, kandi beads, a squishmallow, more skincare and snacks. The third basket consisted of a Little shirt, a teddy bear, slippers, an Arizona Tea Arnold Palmer, candles, and more snacks. There were so many goodies in each basket, I was truly blessed by my Big. Each day also had a note, there was a small note where my Big trolled me to guess who she was by playing 2 truths and a lie. Each day she wrote 2 truths and a lie and instead of telling me the truth, she just kept lying. Thankfully, at the end, I found out who my Big was on reveal day!

Best Little Gifts to Get Your Little

The adrenaline was rushing the night of Reveal Day. Each day I got my basket, I was trying to solve my clues with the new members. It was rough because I couldn’t sleep at all during the night due to how excited I was. I was just so happy to find out who my Big was. Not only that, there was a lot of sleep insomnia happening which messed up my sleep schedule due to midterms and all nighters with my Physics courses.

The day of Big-Little Reveal Day came, all the new members gathered and went to a parking lot. All of us stood backwards behind a car and our Big’s were stuffed inside car trucks getting ready to pop out. As the countdown happened, the Little’s turned around and the Big’s popped out of the trunks. I then proceeded to run to my Big and hug her as I was satisfied with who I got as my Big. I am so glad to have her as my older sister in the Theta Rho chapter.

Looking back at my experience so far, Big-Little baskets are definitely one of the traditions that make joining a sorority so Kappa Delta exciting. It’s not necessarily about how many gifts you receive or how elaborate your baskets look. It’s about knowing that someone took the time to make you feel welcomed.

As a new member, I’m looking forward to creating more memories, building stronger friendships, and experiencing everything Kappa Delta has to offer. Sometimes, the little surprises are what make the biggest memories.

George Mason University '28

I’m a student at George Mason University with interests that range from STEM and technology to fashion, beauty, and campus life. I’ve always liked learning about how things work, especially when it comes to science, engineering, and problem-solving. I enjoy challenging myself academically while also finding creative ways to express myself outside of school. In the future, I’m interested in exploring careers connected to technology, defense, and public service.

Outside of school, I’m really interested in fashion and beauty. I love putting together outfits, keeping up with new trends, experimenting with skincare and makeup, and finding ways to make my personal style feel unique. I also enjoy trying new restaurants, finding cute places around Northern Virginia and D.C., and spending time with friends. As someone with Korean heritage, I also love Korean food and learning more about the traditions and culture I grew up around.

I joined Her Campus because I wanted a creative outlet outside of my usual academic work and a chance to write about topics that I genuinely enjoy. I’m especially interested in writing about college life, fashion, beauty, relationships, career experiences, and navigating life as a student. I hope my articles can feel relatable and useful while still showing my personality. I’m excited to meet new people, become a stronger writer, and share my experiences with the Her Campus community.
