Olivia Rodrigo & Chappell Roan’s “Expectations” Lyrics Got An Iconic Update

Pop stars Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan are single-handedly raising the musical bar with their brand new remix of Rodrigo’s song “expectations” — which has a whole new set of lyrics. And thanks to Roan’s verse, the song got an update that fans are absolutely living for.

The original version of “expectations” dropped back in June 2026 as the 12th track on Rodrigo’s You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love. Since then, Rodrigo’s been performing the anthem almost every day as the last number in her Unraveled tour (and if you haven’t seen the videos of her performing it yet, they’re iconic). The new version, which dropped at 8 p.m. on Oct. 15 alongside a music video starring both Rodrigo and Roan, includes fresh lyrics from Roan about her own expectations for a woman.

In the second verse of the song, Roan sings, “I took her to a concert / Front row, thought it’d be fun / Her hand moving up my skirt / New piercing on her tongue / She said she’d call me later / That was three weeks ago / Classic L.A. behavior (She could’ve just said no).”

Rodrigo’s original chorus (which, don’t get me wrong, is still iconic) was about refusing to settle for a guy who, frankly, sounds like a mess. She wrote, “I won’t settle for a guy with a fake job / They seem so desperate for loving, but, baby, I’m not.” And later continued, “I’m not kissing any boy that is passive / Their indecision is painfully unattractivе / Past mistakes are just new information / These days, I’ve got expectations.” In the new version, Roan flips the second chorus to be from her WLW perspective, singing the exact same verse, just switching the gender. In the final chorus, when Rodrigo says, “I’m not kissing any boy that is passive,” Roan harmonizes and instead sings, “Not kissin’ no boy, no boy.” Living for it.

While Rodrigo and Roan have performed live together before — I mean, who could forget their rendition of Roan’s “HOT TO GO!” from October 2024 — the “expectations” remix marks the first time the pair have officially recorded in the studio together. Yet, it’s certainly not a surprise. They’ve been close friends for years, with Roan being one of the opening acts for Rodrigo’s Sour and Guts tours in 2022 and 2024, respectively. And most recently, Roan performed at Rodrigo’s inaugural Daisy Chain Fields Festival back in August 2026. They also both share the same producer, Dan Nigro (who makes a cameo in the new “expectations” music video), and often work with the same songwriters.

Rodrigo announced the remix and music video on Tuesday, Oct. 13 via an Instagram post (followed by an awesome teaser video on TikTok) showing the singers in their music video looks. She wrote simply: “beyond excited to announce ‘expectations’ featuring Chappell Roan!!! song and video out Thursday!!!!” It’s definitely safe to say that my expectations for the new remix have definitely been exceeded.
