We have been blessed with lots of information about CBD products all over the internet but this can make it rather difficult to pinpoint their exact benefits, intended uses and even which methods of taking them work best. In this article I am going to condense this information into a bite size guide explaining how everything works: outlining the benefits based on research and advice on how you can incorporate this elixir into your life.

What Is CBD?

Cannabidiol aka CBD, is an extract from the cannabis plant, hemp, and in some cases marijuana. When sourced from the hemp plant, CBD does not contain any THC, which is the compound that produces psychoactive effects i.e. the ‘high’ effect. Rather it carries with it multiple therapeutic and supplementary benefits to its users (both people and pets).

How Does it Work?

According to healthline.com, the body has an endocannabinoid system(ECS) which is made of molecules produced by the body, known as endocannabinoids, and their receptors. These are produced as and when needed. I will not bore you with the details of how the entire system works, but the bottom line is that the ECS is greatly involved in maintaining balance through its effects on body processes such as metabolism, appetite, mood, sleep, nerve function, inflammation and chronic pain.

With this in mind we can have some understanding of CBD involvement in the ECS system. There are many expert beliefs around this but the most common one is that the presence of CBD aids in preventing the breakdown of endocannabinoids, allowing them to perform their full function. While many opinions exist, the general consensus is that CBD products can help alleviate many unpleasant symptoms while promoting balance and the proper function of body processes.

CBD Benefits

While research and study are still underway, so far CBD products have been successfully used to treat anxiety, epilepsy, menstrual cramps, insomnia and arthritis. CBD works effectively against anxiety by encouraging the production of the feel good hormone serotonin, thus boosting mood and effectively combating anxiety. It is also wonderful to note that by reducing other anxiety inducing factors such as pain and insomnia, CBD products combat anxiety from multiple angles, making it a potent choice of treatment.

Using CBD Products

CBD products come in various forms be it CBD oil, edibles or capsules. Which form you take them in depends on what is convenient and most effective for you as well as the dosage you require. Taking CBD oil will require you to use a tincture so you can measure your dosage accurately in drops. Take your recommended amount of drops under your tongue or even use it in your recipes. With edibles and capsules you can also monitor your dosage and get the full effects of CBD. As of now there are little known side effects of taking CBD products – considering it safe for adults over 21. If administering to pets it is crucial to be careful with the dosage so as to avoid an overdose.

I'm a second year law student at UCT and I spend too much of my time buried in a novel of some sort. I recently fell in love with working out and do so with my dad almost every morning.
