Formula 1 is often referred to as the pinnacle of motorsport: a high-end, high-stakes competition with global prestige. With its growing relevance and expanding female fanbase, there’s an increasing need for recaps that help fans stay up to speed when they can’t catch every race weekend.

Formula 1, also known as F1, brings an array of interesting tracks, drivers, and events over the calendar year of racing. With the major alterations to regulations this year, the power balance is changing, and a boy from Bologna, Italy, has been leading the pack with dominance.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a young driver for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team, has dominated this racing year, with victories across the calendar and globe as the season has progressed.

He leads as the favorite for the World Drivers’ Championship (WDC), on track to become the youngest champion ever at the end of this season. However, the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia showed just how quickly that dominance can be changed.

The Challenger

During qualifying, Max Verstappen found himself in pole position, with Lewis Hamilton and Isack Hadjar in the top three alongside him. A qualifying result like this has been rare, with it only being the second time a Mercedes driver was not present in the top three.

The actual Grand Prix saw events just as odd as the day before. Due to inclement weather, the start to the race was delayed. After attempting to start the race, the starting procedure was halted due to the struggle of the drivers in the track conditions. Once the procedure had finally been started successfully, the track conditions created split strategy amongst the grid and staggered results.

Verstappen fell behind the Mercedes pair, and after a spin-out from Cadillac driver Valtteri Bottas on lap nine, he was able to recover and pass them around the safety car around lap 13, regaining his pole position.

The Malaysian GP Race

The race featured a multitude of infighting between the Mercedes drivers, as Antonelli felt his pace was stronger than that of teammate George Russell, and as they battled on the track, Antonelli earned P2 from him at lap 21. Lap 43 brought out another Virtual Safety Car, eventually moving to a physical Safety Car as Alex Albon dropped out of the race due to a stop on the track. This led to extra pit stops from the front runners, with Verstappen pulling ahead.

As the Safety Car continued, Russell unfortunately rolled to a halt, earning a “Did Not Finish” (DNF), ending his race early and knocking him out of the top three. This left Verstappen, Antonelli, Hamilton, and Hadjar fighting for the podium in the final few laps.

As the race reached its end, the podium was claimed by Verstappen, Antonelli, and Hamilton, bringing both Verstappen and Red Bull their first win of the season. This also brought the almost-narrowed WDC lead from 84 to 66 points between Antonelli and Russell. However, due to Russell’s DNF, the leaderboard gap was sustained.

The ever-changing face of F1 creates so much to discuss, and with a season with substantial changes in power dynamics, combustion ratio, and even something as simple as car efficiency, it created a season far more eventful than usual. As we move into our next few weeks of racing, all eyes will continue to be on leader Antonelli, awaiting any mistake or continued success that may occur.
