Lines from movies stick with people, whether we want them to or not. And though we might not want to admit it, those powerful quotes will play in our head over and over, altering our brain chemistry. And it’s not a bad thing! Movies not only teach important lessons, but they help make us feel understood. When I am feeling confused and estranged, movies have always been an outlet for me to settle my mind and reconnect with myself. Here is a list of movie quotes that have helped shape the way I think.
“Little Women” (2019)
I’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for. I’m so sick of it, but I’m so lonely,”
Jo March
Many of us know and love the 2019 “Little Women” and have likely heard many classic quotes from this movie. Whether it be Laurie’s love confession on the hill or Amy’s explanation of how marriage is an economic proposition, this movie is full of powerful, thought-provoking moments. However, the one that stuck with me the most was Jo’s monologue near the end of the movie.
This monologue is often quoted for its description of how powerful and independent women are capable of being, yet her confession of loneliness is the part that left me up at night thinking about it over and over again. Seeing a character with such power and ambition admit that she also desires other aspects of life, such as love, has really stuck with me. It has helped me reflect on myself and how I can both be an autonomous woman and still desire to be loved.Â
“La La Land”Â
“People will want to go to it because you’re passionate about it, and people love what other people are passionate about. You remind people of what they forgot,”
Mia Dolan
This quote is from the movie “La La Land” and is an argument between the two main characters, Mia and Sebastian, about pursuing their dreams. Sebastian is giving up his dream of opening a jazz club to instead pursue playing piano for the tour of a pop band. Sebastian confesses that he doesn’t think anyone cares about his dream and Mia responds to Sebastian with this quote.
I especially like this quote because I think it’s true. I really believe that if you care deeply about something, that care and passion will show in your work and others will enjoy seeing that passion and love come through. I am a big lover of art and I think that if an artist shows their passion through their work, it is almost always beautiful.Â
“Before Sunrise”Â
“I always make fun of it and stuff, but isn’t everything we do in life a way to be loved a little more,”Â
Céline
I really resonate with this quote because it takes the broad concept of being loved and connects it to human necessity. This quote also analyzes why people desire love and really asks the overarching question of why people do the things they do. Is being loved really the main motivator in life? I love to think that, in one way or another, everyone is driven by love.
“Almost Famous”Â
“The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you’re uncool.”
Lester Bangs
Though this quote is not part of a necessarily impactful scene in the movie, it has definitely stuck with me. I have always felt that vulnerability is the most important part of being able to connect with people, and this quote perfectly explains that feeling. Willingness to be uncool is so important because it allows you to expose your real self to people and not just the version of yourself that you are to the general public.Â
This quote has really altered the way that I act when connecting with new people. It helped me realise that all we really want is to be our real selves and share that authentic part of us with others. It’s so important to be uncool and accepted.Â
Final Thoughts
Oftentimes, movies can be overlooked and not seen for how impactful and ingenious they truly can be. Whether it be that these quotes made me see things in a brand new light or they perfectly put into words what I could not, I have always found a deep connection with movies and their quotes.Â
