The Askew Student Life Center (ASLC) is one of my favorite places on FSU’s campus. While it contains a variety of student resources and activities, the movie theater is the heart of the building. During my time at FSU, I’ve attended many showings at the theater (my favorite is the annual Rocky Horror Picture Show with the shadow cast), and they’ve made up some of my best memories so far.
They recently released their October movie lineup, and I’m obsessed with what they’ve picked. Not only is there a multitude of movies for different audiences, but they also fit the fall vibes extremely well, and with it being spooky season, there are a bunch of horror movies in the lineup.
Without further ado, here are the films I’m most looking forward to this month! (Spoiler-free!)
October movies
Bones and All (2022)
Directed by Luca Guadagnino, Bones and All follows Maren, a young woman who finds herself on the outskirts of society due to her past. On the road, she meets Lee, and the two find themselves embarking on a journey where they confront their own demons as they grow closer. In the end, they must make a decision that will follow them for the rest of their lives. This movie is genuinely heart-wrenching, and its story is intensely impactful. This will be a rewatch for me, and I’m so ready.
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Hocus Pocus is one of my absolute favorites and a Halloween classic. The film takes place in Salem, Massachusetts, on Halloween night and follows the new kid in school, Max. He accidentally partakes in a ritual and brings the Sanderson Sisters, a coven of witches, back to life for the night. While I might’ve already watched this movie a week ago, I’ll be seeing it again when it’s shown on campus.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma (2026)
This, by far, is the movie I’ve been most excited for this entire year. I haven’t been able to go to the theater and see it, so when I found out ASLC was playing it, I was ecstatic. From director Jane Schoenbrun, TSADCM follows Kris (Hannah Einbinder), who is trying to film a remake of a once-beloved slasher franchise.
In the process, she recruits the original final girl, Billy (Gillian Anderson). While filming the remake, the two enter a mysterious world full of terrifying surprises. As a horror fan and a fan of the cast and crew, I will be there.
Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
As said before, I love this movie, and I love the shadow cast performance. Back again this year, ASLC will be showing one shadow-cast-free version of the show along with two Shadow Cast performances. In the film, Brad and Janet are lost in a storm and make their way to the mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry). There, they find themselves transported to a completely different world as they meet the cast of characters and learn more about Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s creation.
Friday the 13th (1980)
The classic American Summer Camp Slasher film. The film follows camp counselors at Camp Crystal Lake as they attempt to reopen the camp despite the dark events that have once transpired on the grounds. Unbeknownst to them, they’re being watched by a killer. This movie will be playing Halloween night!
Advance Screenings for this Month
While the films above have already had their time in the box office, the ASLC will also be showing movies in advance of their official release date. These advance screenings are always a blast, and they go all out for them (I was lucky enough to attend the Wicked: For Good screening last year). So, it’s so cool that we get two advance screenings in October alone!
Sense and Sensibility (2026)
An adaptation of one of Jane Austen’s most famous novels, Sense and Sensibility follows the three Dashwood sisters after the death of their father, as they move with their mother to a modest cottage from their estate, where they find love and friendship. Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esme Creed-Miles, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach will play the Dashwood Sisters.
Club Kid (2026)
This movie first appeared on my radar when I was in the theater watching Primetime. The trailer was intriguing, and I’m excited that the ASLC is doing an early screening! Club Kid follows Peter (Jordan Firstman), a club promoter in New York City whose life is suddenly thrown off center when a 10-year-old appears claiming to be his son. The trailer focuses on their relationship, and I’m extremely interested to see how the story develops.
While these aren’t all the movies playing this month, these are the ones on my radar. If you’re interested in seeing what other movies they’ll be playing, make sure to look out for when they post on their Instagram. There you can find the film, date, and showtimes all in one place. If you’re a fan of film or simply looking for a fun way to pass the time, the ASLC is the place for you.
