4 EASY WAYS TO MAKE FRIENDS IN COLLEGE — AND ACTUALLY KEEP THEM

“What’s your name? Where are you from? What’s your major?” The holy trinity of questions when meeting new people, unfortunately, doesn’t get you very far. It didn’t for me, at least. After having the same conversation with dozens of other eager freshmen, it’s a bummer to realize that, in a school with more than 30,000 students, the chances of ever meeting them again are astronomically low.

I felt like a tiny speck in the universe. One among a gazillion other specks, but still alone. Psychological research shows that having social support and companionship is essential for a healthy and fulfilling life. Honestly, I just wanted to talk to someone and maybe get coffee together.

Going to a big school like Cal means needing to put in effort to maintain relationships. I’m a freshman, just four weeks into college, so I won’t proclaim to know the ins and outs of campus life yet. But this is what’s served me well so far!

1. ROOMMATES (AND SUITEMATES!!)

I’m super lucky to not just have the best roommate ever, but also the best suite-mates! We’ve already gone on countless trips to Trader Joe’s, taken the BART to San Francisco to see the ocean, and explored thrift stores and cafes. Even if you don’t click with your roommates right away, they’re the people you’ll see every day, so take advantage of that sacred proximity and go out on a fun adventure with them! Pro tip: exchange class schedules to find out when you can get lunch or dinner together.

    2. JOIN FUN CLUBS

Consulting clubs? BLEH. I’ve met the coolest people from clubs that don’t even have an application. You already have something in common with them just by being there, whether it’s for animal advocacy or amateur sports. Plus, you’ll see them every week!

    3. TEXT PEOPLE

Remember the people that you met on the first week of orientation? Remember how you’d exchanged socials with them, promising to text and never did? Now you resort to watching their stories and wishing that they’ll text you first. Well, stop. Click on their profile. Ask them if they want to get matcha or something. Nine times out of ten they’ll say yes. They’re probably waiting for you to text first, too.

    4. JOIN GREEK LIFE

Although Greek life may not be for everyone, it’s definitely a foolproof way to meet tons of people that are enthusiastic about becoming your friend. Sororities throw a ton of socials and philanthropy events each semester, so it’s a perfect way to bond with your sisters. Missed fall rush? No worries, there’re always a couple of chapters that host Continuous Open Bidding (COB) throughout the school year. Be sure to check their Instagram pages on updates or email the Panhellenic Committee!
