On March 7, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle held a sit-down interview with former talk show host, Oprah Winfrey. Before the interview was released the media went into a frenzy and anticipated the interview coverage. Many praised and wanted to find out reasons as to why Harry and Meghan decided to defect from the royal family and give up their titles as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Also, viewers, or broadcasters such as Meghan Kelly, bashed the two because they constantly asked for privacy, but continued to interact with the media.
Prior to the interview being released, accusations were brought upon Markle by unknown staffers at Buckingham Palace. They accused her of bullying, which led to a toxic environment for workers and even pushed some workers to cry. These allegations prompted some of Markle’s friends to defend her such as tennis player, Serena Williams, and Suits co-star, Patrick Adams. Soon after the allegations were spread to the public, the Palace decided to launch an investigation into the accusations which brought on criticism from the public. To add on, media broadcasters like ex “Good Morning Britain” host, Piers Morgan, bashed Markle (which he did on the regular).
Before Meghan and Harry married, the media attacked and bashed Markle for different reasons. When it was announced that Harry and Meghan were dating, many were happy to see a biracial woman, mixed with Black and white, become part of the royal family in England. Also, some viewers were not including the media who went as low as to make racist comments against Markle’s black heritage. This prompted Prince Harry to release a statement coming to Markle’s defense. With Markle being an American female that had a divorce, the media harped on such an ideal, labeling her constantly as a “divorced woman that is older than Prince Harry.” This resulted in many even looking into their financial records because they believed she was marrying Harry solely for money.
In some instances, Markle was attacked for her attire, such as a black suit she wore to an event with Prince Harry. Also, her wedding dress was attacked by the media for the way it fit her body, sometimes going as far as asking celebrities how they felt about it. To add on, her shoulders showing in different dresses has promoted criticism because some found it too provocative. Though the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, has worn dresses of such.
They accused Markle of causing Prince Harry’s hair loss which was happening before Markle entered the picture because it is a family trait. Also, she has been attacked for eating avocados due to them playing a part in gang wars in Mexico. When Kate Middleton was pregnant, she frequently would be complimented and deemed beautiful especially when cupping her bump. Meghan was attacked for doing such an act and accused of trying to show off her pregnancy.
She has been judged to the moon and back, but the biggest media criticism has come from her family issues. Such as her strained relationships with her father, Thomas Markle, and sister, Samatha Markle. They have been given a platform to bash Markle continually since the time it was released that Harry and Meghan were in a relationship.
During times when the media constantly bashed Markle, the Palace never spoke out about the inhumane treatment that she was getting. Though when allegations came out against her about bullying the Palace did speak out, released a statement, and decided to launch an investigation. I find it strange that the Palace can speak out about such an act while Prince Andrew has still not been investigated about his connections to sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. I see the biased nature going on not only in the media but within the Palace. I know many say Prince Andrew isn’t being covered in the media as much because he stays away from the media that is not an excuse. If a person is being accused of being a pedophile and having connections to a pedophile of course they’re going to stay away from the media. I’m not saying Megan and Harry are innocent because we don’t know what went on behind the scenes, but what I do know is that there seems to be a bias against Meghan Markle. Even before she married Prince Harry many people have had allegations against them that shall include Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, and Prince William who has been accused of cheating on his wife, Kate Middleton. They were once ignored, but now it seems like when such allegations are being brought upon the media deflects back to Meghan Markle.
