The Brazilian Movie ‘My Best Friend’ and the Importance of Female Friendships

The new Brazilian movie My Best Friend has already broken box office records in the country. But why is the plot attracting so much attention from viewers?

The cast includes famous Brazilian actresses Ingrid Guimarães and Mônica Martelli, who are real-life friends off the screen. Because of this, they barely even had to act. Interestingly, however, their real-life chemistry isn’t the main reason movie theaters are packed. It’s because the film tackles a highly relatable topic: after all, every woman has—or should have—a female best friend.

Romantic Interests Come and Go, but Female Friendships Stay

Every girl can have many romantic interests throughout her life. Some will have more than others, but if one thing is for sure, it’s that all of them share a common denominator: that female best friend. She is the girl you can count on, spill the tea with, and share your deepest secrets with. She will listen to you, be honest with you, and support every good decision in your life.

Sometimes, though, we forget these things and lose sight of how glamorous and essential female friendships can be. We prioritize romantic relationships, pushing aside the one true person who has been by our side the longest. Obviously, this is not about neglecting your partner, but rather about finding a healthy balance and giving a fair amount of attention to both.

When we are in love, all we want to do is be with that one person. That’s not wrong, but it can be dangerous. Once we prioritize one thing and pour all our energy into it, everything else is automatically sidelined. The girl who has always lifted you up and trusted you the most becomes just another friend you aren’t that close to anymore. And here is a warning: not every friend will be patient. Loving you does not mean they are obligated to wait around for you or settle for being pushed aside. Some girls will leave. And if or when the romance ends, you’ll find yourself alone, missing someone truly special.

One thing is certain: a female friendship is something a boy could never replace. As the popular saying goes, boys come and go, but friends are forever. Don’t lose that bond, and always find a way to respect both your partner and your best friend. You will need them at different times and in different situations, and preserving both relationships is crucial.

Every Time a Female Bond Begins, a Fairy is Born

Sometimes, this bond forms when you’re little, scared, and alone on your first day of school. You’re six years old, and a girl just as small walks up to you and asks, “Do you want to be my friend?” That simple “yes” changes your life. Or maybe you’re eighteen, scared once again, and alone on your first day of college. A girl walks up to you and says, “So, you’re a freshman too?” and everything falls into place. It’s like magic. In the blink of an eye, a lifetime with that friend goes by.

Creating a bond with another woman is deeply important. After all, there are things only a girl can understand: hormones, heartbreaks, and the pervasive feeling of “not being enough” that society often forces upon us. It’s about sisterhood—the mutual support between women, whether in politics or everyday life, that emphasizes our unity.

The movie My Best Friend explores exactly this. It highlights the sorority, emotional support, and unity behind a true, long-lasting female friendship. The film is trending in cinemas not just because it’s a “chick flick,” but because it provides an honest and enlightening representation of that bond. Much like the Barbie Movie , this Brazilian film delivers an important message about cherishing the women in your life rather than viewing them as rivals. While the importance of female connections has been discussed in International media before, having it so beautifully represented by a national production is both essential and groundbreaking.

“Nearly everything I know about love, I’ve learnt from my long-term friendships with women”. That quote came from a book called Everything I Know About Love, by Dolly Alderton. In it, the British author reflects on her own life and the many relationships she has had. By the end of the book, looking back as an adult, she realizes that almost everything we learn about affection comes from friendships. She highlights how society trains us to associate the word “love” strictly with romance, even though we are constantly surrounded by profound familiar and platonic love.

The bond of female friendship helps us navigate the disillusionment of heartbreak, the chaos of growing up, and life’s hardest moments. Sometimes, all we need is a girl to hold us close while we eat pizza and ice cream and cry. It is a beautiful thing to have someone to lift us up, share our deepest memories, and laugh with until our stomachs hurt. Someone who stays, who truly knows you, and who is fully committed to a long-term friendship.

A woman’s friendship is one of the deepest love a girl can feel. Last but not least, a lasting female friendship isn’t always a bed of roses. For it to endure, you will both have to stumble, fail, get back up, and make amends, leaving your egos at the door. A healthy friendship doesn’t just exist—it is actively developed over the years. It is a structure that molds itself to every life change, every argument, and every phase of growth (and people change all the time!). But this is a good thing; it proves that the connection between two women is strong enough to survive anything.

So yes, a female bond is a powerful connection and a vital part of a woman’s life. If it is built on respect, free of jealousy, and genuinely true, nothing can break or even replace it.

It is incredibly important to represent this kind of love not only on television but across the internet, in books, and throughout all media. This is especially true for the newer generation. Gen Z girls sometimes seem less invested in this topic, occasionally prioritizing male friends or romanticizing the idea of ending a friendship over a date.

Having a woman to support you while you support her back isn’t just a nice thing to have—it is a fundamentally healthy way to live.
