Sydney Sweeney has taken over headlines once again, and once again, not in a positive light.
The “Euphoria” actress partnered with the sports prediction market platform Novig where she appeared with little or no clothing, covering parts of her body with strategically placed footballs and other sports apparel, repeatedly saying “sports.”
Women athletes and non-athletes flooded social media with concerns.
“I can’t describe how infuriated I feel when I watch this,” four-time Olympic swimming gold medalist Ariarne Titmus wrote on Instagram. “How do we live in a world where monetizing a woman’s body and sexualizing women’s sport is still a thing?”
The advertisement was a gross depiction of women in sports, sexualizing the nature of female participation and audiences.
Sweeney did not respond in a written or verbal sense, but she shared a series of “Body Issue” magazine covers showing prominent athletes posing nude or semi-nude.
I get it; I get what she was trying to prove. She is highlighting the fact that other women are upset with her for making a profit off her body, but are not upset with men for doing the same thing. In this case, it was not her first offense.
Sweeney is no stranger to controversy.
On July 23, 2025, American Eagle released their advertisement with Sweeney titled, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” The commercial unintentionally poked fun at the “jeans” and “genes” homophone, telling audiences that Sweeney has good “genes” because she is white with a great boob job and curves.
It was yet another advertisement sexualizing Sweeney’s body and inadvertently faulting the way other women look.
A month before, Sweeney partnered with Dr.Squatch, a men’s soap brand, to create her own body wash. The bar was made with sand, pine bark extract, and – oh, get ready for this – actual droplets of water from her bathtub filming session. The gimmick sparked conversation, but since it was her first offense, it did not necessarily take her out of the public eye. Women were simply just concerned with the over-sexualization of her body.
Sweeney portrayed the character of Cassie Howard, a provocative high school girl who lived to be validated by men, in the hit television series, “Europhia.” The show did wonders for Sweeney and truly is the reason for her fame and fortune. The show ended in May and Sweeney seemingly cannot let it go. We get it girl: your popularity is from “Europhia,” but it’s time to separate the art from the artist.
In 2023, She took a role in “Anyone But You,” a cute, innocent romantic comedy with Glen Powell. I love love love that movie. Sweeney did a great job at portraying her character. It truly gave me the 2000s vibes I love so much about my favorite movies.
That being said, I have never seen a Sweeney movie without a sex scene. She’s making money but I’m tired. She can’t say she’s a girl’s girl if she’s constantly taking her shirt off to please the male eye.
Sweeney, before you sign an advertisement deal, maybe reflect on how your audiences will view it first. Your advertisements completely diminish the fight women have had to prove that there is more behind a woman than her body.
