Luckily, tons of incredible authors are keeping us fed this year, releasing new books in fall 2026 that flawlessly match the vibes we need to see in a great fall read. If you’re anything like me, the first sign of orange leaves sends you running to replace your summer beach reads and post up in a comfy spot with a book to match the autumnal energy. From fantasy and romance to dark academia and thrillers, there is truly a book for every type of reader that’s being released in fall 2026 that you can add to your TBR. What better place to spend the first few weeks of fall than scouring a bookstore for the newest releases?

Whether you’re a new reader, someone just looking for a good story that will help you avoid thinking about classes for a bit, or you’ve been scouring BookTok looking for the perfect book, there’s no better time than now to start searching for your next read. If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed by the never-ending choices facing you when you walk into the bookstore, here are a few of the most anticipated titles you can look for on shelves in fall 2026.

A Court of Splintered Harmony by Sarah J. Maas

It’s been five years since the last ACOTAR book was released, and fans are justifiably gnawing at the bars of their enclosures while waiting for the sixth book in the series, A Court of Splintered Harmony, to be released on Oct. 27. After Maas announced the next two books in the series on the Call Her Daddy podcast back in March 2026, fans have been speculating about what we could see in the upcoming books. There have been fan theories on everything from potential crossovers with Maas’s other series to what love stories we might see in the new novels, but one thing is for certain: Fans will find the perfect fantasy read in Maas’s upcoming additions to the magical world she’s created. 

The Lion and the Deathless Dark by Carissa Broadbent

Offering the perfect vibes leading up to spooky season, Carissa Broadbent returned in August with the penultimate book in her Crowns of Nyaxia series. The fantasy series is set in a world of feuding vampires and Gods, creating a truly unique world with dynamic characters. The series is made up of three duets, with every two books following a new duo of characters. While you don’t need to have read her previous books to enjoy The Lion and the Deathless Dark, there are tons of cameos from earlier characters throughout the book. With readers only waiting for one more book to conclude the series, and the stakes rising higher with every new novel, I truly can’t recommend this book (and this series) enough. 

The Knave and the Moon by Rachel Gillig

If you’ve read Rachel Gillig’s bestseller The Knight and the Moth, you’ve probably been waiting with bated breath for the next book in the duology — especially after suffering through that plot twist and the brutal cliffhanger Gillig left us with. Luckily, The Knave and the Moon, the next book in the duology, was released on Sept. 1, picking up with the story of Sybil Delling. Delling is a diviner whose entire world is upended when she discovers the Omens she’s devoted her life to may not be as altruistic as she’s been taught to believe, forcing her to trust errant knight Rory Myndacious when she flees her home at the cathedral. 

The Thief and the Traitor Bride by V. L. Bovalino

The second book in The Hand and the Heart series by V. L. Bovalino is set in the same fantasy world as the first book in the series, The Second Death of Locke, though it follows a new set of characters. Nore and Caspian, a spy and a thief with a strained relationship, are forced to work together on an assignment 10 years after a very turbulent end to their marriage. While you could pick up this book without reading the first book in the series, The Thief and the Traitor Bride gives us a glimpse of what the characters from the first novel have been up to that makes it that much more exciting for readers of the whole series. The novel hits shelves on Sept. 29.

Tempest by Victoria Aveyard

Victoria Aveyard, the author best known for the Red Queen series, is making her adult fantasy debut with Tempest, the first book in a duology following Cat Rose, a lady-turned-queen of a pirate tavern who is forced to choose between her life or the life of the only man she ever loved. The Meridian Empire tasks her with bringing in a ship captained by Valerian Kane, the one captain they cannot best in their mission to defeat the pirate republic. The author announced that the novel is being adapted for TV, so you can pick up a copy of Tempest on Sept. 8 to be prepared for its eventual on-screen debut.

Dead Beat by Leigh Bardugo

The Grishaverse author Leigh Bardugo is returning with the final book in the Alex Stern series on Sept. 15. The trilogy begins with Ninth House, the novel in which Alex finds herself suddenly enrolled at Yale after a tragedy left her with an unexpected chance to turn her life around. She joins Lethe House, a group dedicated to monitoring the secret societies on Yale’s campus, and finds herself facing an entirely new set of challenges. Dead Beat is the perfect combination of dark academia and fantasy vibes for your fall reading list. 

Victorious by V. E. Schwab

V. E. Schwab is returning on Oct. 6 with the final book in her Villains trilogy. The first book in the series, Vicious, follows Victor Vale and his roommate-turned-rival Eli Ever as they find a way to give themselves Extraordinary powers, only to launch themselves into a decade-long war. The last book in the series shows readers whether Victor’s unending plotting to come out victorious is successful, even after the strife he went through in the second novel. I was lucky enough to get my hands on an early copy of Victorious, and all I can say is it was well worth the excruciating eight-year wait since the last book was released.

Taipei Story by R. F. Kuang

R. F. Kuang’s newest novel, Taipei Story, is a deeply personal story for the author, following Lily Chen, a Chinese American student spending the summer in Taipei at an intensive language program in the hopes of connecting to her culture and her family. With the chaos of school keeping her busy, she doesn’t get the chance to dive into her family history before her grandfather passes away, leaving her grieving over her unanswered questions and the relationship she wished she had been able to develop despite the language barrier she faced. This poignant story is sure to offer an emotional, beautiful story that you can dive into on Sept. 8. 

Hollywood, Ending by John Green

If you were in school in the 2010s, chances are you’ve heard of John Green — whether that was from watching his Crash Course videos in class or because you were just as obsessed with his YA novels as I was. After venturing into nonfiction with The Anthropocene Reviewed and Everything is Tuberculosis, Green is returning to fiction with his first adult novel, Hollywood, Ending, which follows Juniper and Kai, two actors working on the same biopic who are learning to balance fame alongside their budding romance. You can find Hollywood, Ending at your local bookstore on Sept. 22. 

Hollow Bones by Jodi Picoult

Bestselling author Jodi Picoult is releasing her 30th novel on Sept. 15. Hollow Bones follows Molly Fitzgerald, a woman who lost her mother in the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, and has since dedicated her life to helping prevent disasters. This gripping story follows her and her husband, Jesse, as they deal with an unexpected problem that puts strain on their marriage and forces them to confront the lies they’ve told themselves about their hardest moments. If you’ve read any of Picoult’s other novels, you may even notice some familiar faces when you pick up Hollow Bones in September.

The Witch by Freida McFadden

Just in time for Halloween, The Housemaid author Freida McFadden is releasing her newest thriller on Oct. 6. The Witch follows Julia Barlow, a woman who has recently lost her job and is forced to move to her family’s estate to check in on her grandmother. There, she hears someone screaming out every night, leading her to unearth the story of a woman executed for witchcraft in 1692. There’s no better time to dive into this witchy book than in the middle of fall. 

The Worst Is Yet To Come by Trish Lundy

There’s no better time to read a murder mystery than in October. Author Trish Lundy is fulfilling your true crime needs with her newest book, The Worst Is Yet to Come, releasing on Oct. 6. When Rose and her best friend are left to die at an abandoned house, only Rose makes it out alive when Jake, a former high school quarterback, finds her just in time. Devastated by her friend’s death, she becomes determined to find the killer. In her search, it’s revealed that two other girls suffered the same fate 17 years earlier, leading her to wonder if this is a copycat killer or if the murderer has returned. 

A Married Little Christmas by Abby Jimenez

What better way to get ready for the holidays than with a Christmas romance novel right before the end of the fall semester? Abby Jimenez’s newest book, A Married Little Christmas, is made up of three novellas following Anna, Matty, and Lauren in their separate love stories centered around the holidays. The romantic stories are out Oct. 20, giving readers plenty of time to pick it up before winter begins.
