As a first-time commuter this summer, I’ve learned that the contents of my bag are essential. Recently, New York City has frequently been hit by thunderstorms, heat waves, and high humidity, making beauty and haircare products even more essential. Not to mention, as a commuter, particularly an NJ Transit one, entertainment is just as crucial. As this summer has progressed, I’ve learned which items live up to my expectations. Whether I’m on my daily commute, grabbing dinner, or walking around the city without a clear destination (my favorite activity!), these are the products I’ll be reaching for again and again.

  1. Girl on Girl: How Pop Culture Turned a Generation of Women Against Themselves by Sophie Gilbert, $20

Truthfully, I go through periods of reading dry spells, but I promised myself I’d prioritize reading this summer. When I picked up this book, I found it addicting. As a media studies major, I love cultural critiques. Sophie Gilbert starts in the ‘90s, covering the riot grrrl movement, when female musicians were loud and powerful, before recounting the 2000s, when women were taught to be meek. It’s a fascinating read on popular culture and gender theory.

  1. Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Red Dahlia, $5

My lips can be prone to dryness, but I found the Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm to be an excellent solution. As I prefer softer makeup looks, the Red Dahlia shade is perfect: natural, but still noticeable. It’s perfect for on-the-go, as it easily fits into any pocket. An added bonus: its sweet scent, which is fruity without being overpowering.

  1. Sisley Paris The Radiance Brush, $95

As a person with curly hair and bangs (double whammy), I’m convinced my hair can smell fear. But fear not: while the price tag is admittedly steep, this hairbrush is well worth the investment. It gently glides through my hair by providing painless detangling.

  1. Aussie Curls Curl Refresher Spray, $10

This spray has become my go-to when my hair needs a little extra help. If my hair becomes flat or undefined between wash days, I’ll spritz this spray to give me a quick refresh without the need for a full rewash and restyling. Its affordability is an added bonus.

  1. Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, $22

I’ve tried my fair share of curly hair creams, but I always find myself coming back to this one. It’s hydrating, and it defines my curls without them feeling stiff. Even though the tube appears deceptively small, it lasts me a long time due to the cream’s thickness.

  1. Garnier Fructis Air Dry Butter Cream, $8

I recently met Jackie Garza, and she truly embodied what it means to be an influencer. During our conversation regarding curly hair woes, she recommended this product to me. I found it affordable and highly effective. It enhances my curls and leaves my hair soft and frizz-free.

  1. Not Your Mother’s 3-in-1 Wax Stick, $10

Due to my office’s proximity to the water, I’m especially prone to flyaways on windy days. I recently purchased this wax stick, which smooths down loose hairs and keeps them in place. I also love its portable size; it easily slips into my purse for quick touch-ups throughout the day.

Overall, these products have made navigating my first summer as a commuter much easier. Whether I’m settling into a book on the train or styling my hair, each item is in my routine for a reason. They make even the hottest, most humid days in the city more manageable, and they’ve all earned a permanent spot in my summer rotation.
