After writing about things to do in Westwood, I had the opportunity to visit Sender One in Westwood. You may have walked past it wondering what it has to offer, and I’m here to tell you all about it.
Sender One has a lot to offer across its multiple locations, and the Westwood location is primarily a bouldering gym. In addition to climbing, they offer yoga classes included with both a membership and a day pass, as well as $10 drop-in yoga. The yoga room also hosts events, with weekly classes held Monday through Thursday at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. For those interested, you can attend yoga for $10 and add a $19 day pass to access the full facility.
Beyond climbing and yoga, the space includes a small strength room, a retail area, and even study spaces with standing desks and coffee, making it easy to spend a few hours there.
Hours:
- Monday–Friday: 8 a.m. – 10 p.m.
- Saturday and Sunday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Sender One also offers several affordable options, especially for UCLA students. Every first and third Monday of the month is College Student Day, where a day pass is just $10 instead of the usual $29. They also currently offer a First-Time Discovery Pass (available through the end of May), which includes five visits with rentals for $59 over a two-month period.
You may have already attended a UCLA-affiliated event at Sender One, and if not, it’s definitely a space worth considering. The gym has hosted a variety of groups, including the Backpacking Club, physiology majors, engineering groups, film clubs, UCLA Granite and UCLA Health. They are open to hosting more student organizations, and clubs can reach out about group rates or even corporate memberships.
Since joining the Westwood location, manager Andrew and his team have also been working to make Sender One even more community-focused, creating a welcoming environment both for experienced climbers and people completely new to bouldering. That focus on accessibility and connection is reflected through the variety of events, student outreach and club partnerships the space continues to host.
The space has also hosted unique events, including a rave a few months ago and a Netflix event more recently. There’s always something happening, and it’s a place where you can either bring friends or find a new community.
For groups, Sender One offers strong rates — UCLA clubs can host events at about $15 per person for a two-hour session, making it a solid option for socials or even birthday parties.
Regulars describe the gym as a strong community and say they enjoy having a location so close to UCLA. Many see it as a way to reset after a long week. Bouldering itself offers something different — it’s not just about being athletic, but also about being mindful. To complete routes successfully, you have to slow down, stay calm and think through each move. That balance between physical effort and mental focus is something many climbers really appreciate. Several people I spoke to have been coming consistently for months or even years.
It’s also just a fun experience — especially with friends.
Sender One offers beginner-friendly options as well, including an intro to bouldering class for those just getting started. If you’re planning to visit, don’t forget to fill out the waiver ahead of time: https://linktr.ee/senderone_lax
