One of my favorite life mottos has always been to be a mosaic of everything and everyone you’ve ever loved, and, over time, I’ve found simple ways to express this. Through personal whimsy and style, here are some ways I’ve learned to showcase my special interests as a fangirl and capture that main character energy.
- Personalized Shoes
-
Thrifting for my next pair of Converse always fills me with so much joy because the possibilities to customize your shoes are endless. I like to think of shoes as a blank canvas on which I can cover all over with my varying interests.
With lyrics from my favorite songs scrawled onto the sole and a fresh set of laces to be filled with stars and colors, I love to let my creativity shine through with these pieces. You can even sew little patterns and phrases on for some extra personality as well.
- Meaningful Rings
-
I sport a variety of rings day by day as a mixed metals warrior. My favorite part of these pieces, however, is that I’ve collected them all from someplace special and therefore they mean something special to me.
Two of my rings are from my grandmother, and another one is from Pandora’s Stranger Things collection. A ring with the saying “Friends Don’t Lie” is another subtle nod to my infatuation with the show.
Last but not least, I’ve purchased three rings from the brand Pura Vida because they always have rings that encapsulate me perfectly.
From rings of daisy chains to ocean bands (yes, I’m fully in my “daughter of Poseidon” era), I feel like I can always show my love for the smaller things in life through my jewelry choices.
- Self-Painted Nails
-
Painting your own nails not only saves you money from the salon but also gives you free rein to subtly hint at your interests.
Some of my personal favorite nail combos I’ve done in the past are the Taylor Swift Eras Tour nails, ghosts for Halloween, and blue and yellow this winter for the Heated Rivalry yearners.
Ella+mila is one of my favorite nail polish brands to recommend because they always have the most niche and unique colors, from metallic to multicolor glitter stars.
- Lockets
-
Lockets are on the rise for personal style now, and I can see why. There’s something romantic about being able to keep a photo of someone close to your heart, well, close to your actual physical heart.
Whether you’re trying to channel your inner Peeta Mellark from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire or just trying to elevate your style, consider getting a locket and filling it with a photo you love.
- Glitter Eyeshadow & Eyeliner
-
I feel like a main character always needs her style trademark, and this stardust glitter is mine. I can’t recommend the brand Urban Decay enough, as they are bound to have your favorite color featured as a special makeup combo. Glitter eyeliner just adds more whimsy to my life, and I can’t get enough.
- Handmade Bracelets
-
If there’s something I gained from my Eras Tour experience, it’s the beauty of friendship bracelet making and trading. Every time I go to a concert now, I come home with a plethora of beautiful beaded bracelets that I still wear to this day. There’s something really special about a person who took time out of their day to make you a gift.
I trade bracelets with all my friends now, and each one holds a special place in my heart. From favorite lyrics to funny inside jokes, my arms are decorated with kooky sayings from the ones I love.
- Up Your Sock Game
-
An opinion I’ve always stood by is that socks are one of the most underrated pieces of clothing. I’ve always had a wide sock collection ever since I was a little girl, even having knee-high socks with mini capes and ties.
Today, my sock collection includes lacy black and white numbers I get to layer over my Converse high tops, legwarmers-turned-socks, as well as more colorful pieces covered in everything and anything from daisies to strawberries.
- Stickered and Bedazzled
-
One of my favorite Y2K trends we are bringing back is the need to cover technology with colorful stickers and gems. Yes, I do want to see everything from your headphones to your digital camera to your phone sparkling in hot pink and green diamonds.
You can also use stickers of your favorite characters, like Miffy and Pusheen, to add a little extra personalization.
- Buttons
-
Adding buttons to my tote bags is something I’ve done for a while now, and I love the versatility of personality this choice gives me. One day, I may be wearing a “Science Rocks” pin, and the next day, it’ll be a pin professing my love for Mr. Darcy.
- Henna
-
If you’re not ready to commit to a permanent art piece inked onto your body like I am, henna can work as a great temporary alternative.
Not only is it relatively cheap, but the designs that are possible are endless. Some of my favorite simple henna patterns are stars as moles or freckles (referencing Taylor Swift’s line, “you drew stars around my scars,” in “cardigan”), swirls, and vines connecting across your wrists.
You can also add in little doodles of your own personal interests and have a little friend for a week or two.
Overall, I hope these ideas sparked some creative passion back into your life and reinvigorated your inner fangirl. Everyone deserves to live out their “main character” hopes and dreams.
