Dearest Gentle Reader, This Author is Thrilled to Announce That She Enjoyed ‘Bridgerton’ Season 4 Part 1

I have been a fan of Bridgerton for some time. Queen Charlotte is the best series throughout the entire Bridgerton franchise; that’s a fact. Although after season three, I was starting to lose hope in the Bridgerton franchise because I wasn’t a fan of how the love story went down in that season. So, I was very skeptical when Netflix announced season four, and since they changed showrunners after season two, I walked into the season with a wary hope it wouldn’t turn out like season three. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case this season; in fact, I’m planning to rewatch the first four episodes because they were so much better. Season four of Bridgerton felt like a breath of fresh air that the audience had been waiting to let out after the last season.

The Netflix series Bridgerton is based on eight books set in the Regency era. The series follows eight siblings of the noble Bridgerton family, and each book revolves around one sibling finding their happily ever after, more so, getting married and finding their other person. So far, we have had three seasons revolving around each Bridgerton sibling: Daphne in season one, Anthony in season two, and Colin in season three. Now this season focuses on the funniest sibling, Benedict. Bridgerton season four was renewed on April 13, 2021, although the first four episodes were released on Jan. 29, and the next four will be released on Feb. 26.

This season, we follow Benedict as he tries to find the one for him. During a masquerade ball, he finds a woman who captures his heart. We find out that the woman’s name is Sophie Baek. Although, the twist is that since it’s a masquerade ball, Benedict doesn’t know what Sophie looks like without the mask. All he has to remember her by is the glove she left behind and the kiss they shared. So, Benedict goes on a hunt around Mayfair and tries to find Sophie so that he can marry her. The catch is that Sophie herself was not actually meant to be at the ball; she is a maid who serves under her evil stepmother and her two stepsisters. This is reminding you of something, right? An iconic Disney princess is ringing a bell? Anyway, since Sophie is a maid, she cannot reveal the truth about her time at the ball or that she stole Benedict’s heart.

That’s all I will say about this season. I don’t want to give too much away, but since there are only four episodes, there isn’t much to share just yet. I really love that this season is like Cinderella, but with more tension and no “bibbidi bobbidi boo” magic that convinces Sophie she needs to go to the ball. Also, I really loved how this season doesn’t focus only on the nobles, we get a glimpse of the maids’ side as well. We get a few scenes where we get to understand more about the maids, why they work where they do, etc. I really appreciated that we got that this season. While there are a bunch of highs, one thing I didn’t really enjoy that much is how much the queen has taken over Lady Whistledown. For those who don’t know, in the last season, it was revealed to every character in the series that Lady Whistledown is none other than Penelope Featherington. And for those who don’t know the importance of Lady Whistledown, think of her as Gossip Girl, an anonymous writer who reveals all of the juiciest secrets and drama in “the Ton” and writes them in a pamphlet. Since it was announced who Lady Whistledown is, the queen is assisting Featherington and trying to come up with gossip to write about. That one change wasn’t something I really enjoyed. I kind of wanted to wait until the last season of Bridgerton to find out who Lady Whistledown is.

So far throughout this season, Bridgerton has had a strong start, and hopefully the next four episodes will maintain the same level of excitement and tension for our leading couple. One critique I do have for this season is that there weren’t any Anthony scenes in part one; there better be at least two scenes, or I will be very upset.
