Dressing Up Sparks Motivation: The Science Behind It

I have always been a firm believer in the idea that when I’m wearing a nice outfit, I will undoubtedly take the respective day by storm. Recently, however, I thought to myself that there may very well be some factual evidence behind this mindset. Sure enough, after some general research, I found that there is a psychological explanation for this feeling. Here are some of my main takeaways:

Colors Are Evocative!

It’s no secret that certain colors have specific associations. Taking this into account, bright and vibrant colors aid in evoking energy and enthusiasm, therefore contributing to one’s degree of motivation.

A Mental Shift

Sweatshirts and sweatpants are often cognitively linked to a mental state of rest, as they are designed for comfort purposes. Wearing a nice sweater and jeans as an alternative, for example, is indicative of a state of action.

Increased Confidence/Mood Booster

Elaborating on the previous point about mental shifts, wearing clothes that represent authority, such as a suit and tie, can make you feel more powerful and capable. This, in turn, improves your self-perception and, therefore, your state of mind in terms of confidence.

After consulting with some peers about these findings, they all agreed with the fact that dressing up sparks motivation, but many were unaware of the specific reasons behind why this is the case. With all of this being said, consider dressing up to be a “life hack” to a degree if you feel as though you need to be especially productive (especially with finals season approaching)!
