I recently hit my 1,000-day streak on Duolingo — which is a huge accomplishment for me! I started back in March of 2023 and have been switching between French and Spanish, and while I was abroad, I even added a little Italian and German.
This little green bird has been haunting me for the past few years… jk. Honestly, it’s been hilarious keeping up with this streak. I have no idea how many streak freezes I used but those SAVED ME when I was clubbing abroad.
If you hang out with me for even one day, you’ll probably hear about my Duolingo streak and watch me scrambling to finish a lesson at 11:57 p.m., doing it as fast as I can before the clock strikes midnight.
You could catch me doing it in an Uber before going out, while clocked in at work before dinner service, at the pregame, and literally in the most random places you can imagine. My friends jump when they hear the “ding” after I complete a task. (sorry <3)
Even though it’s been more fun and games, I actually learned a lot more French than I expected. I started French because of the books I used to read in high school and immediately fell in love with Paris and the language. I even used some French in Paris — I was able to communicate over the phone and do basic things (I was too scared to try anything more advanced lol).
As for Spanish, I used Duolingo mostly to keep myself in check and practice whenever I felt like it. When I was abroad, I did mostly Spanish since I was living in Spain, and it just made sense. Overall… I don’t think I learned anything new in Spanish. (But hey it was good practice!)
If you’re trying to learn a language, I think Duolingo is great for keeping you accountable — but use it like a game to practice on top of real language classes.
I’m now on day 1004 and have a goal of hitting 1050… or whatever the longest streak is! Let’s see how far I can get…
