Finals week. Honestly, it makes my heart race, my brain completely shut down, and my whole life feel like a never-ending rollercoaster of panic. If you’re like me and anxiety hits hard during this time, you know it’s not just stress, it’s full-on freak-out mode. But over the years, through college, I’ve figured out a few ways to get through it without totally losing my mind….

Step 1: Accept That You’re Anxious

Here’s the thing: anxiety is going to happen. I used to beat myself up for feeling stressed or panicky, but that just made it worse. Now, I try to remind myself that it’s okay to feel this way. Your brain is just freaking out because you care, and that’s not a bad thing.

Step 2: Study Like a Human, Not a Robot

All-nighters? Nope. I stick to shorter study sessions (think 25–45 minutes) and give myself legit breaks, snacks, TikTok, or even just staring out the window. Quizzing myself, explaining concepts out loud, or rewriting notes in colorful pens helps me actually remember stuff instead of my brain melting into a pile of anxiety.

Step 3: Presenting Without Freaking Out

Ah, presentations, the ultimate finals anxiety trigger. I used to (honestly, still do) imagine everyone staring at me, judging every word, every blink, every weird pause. Then I realized: nobody cares that much. Seriously. Here’s my trick: imagine everyone in the room is in their underwear. Weird? Definitely. Effective? Absolutely.

Most classmates are too busy thinking about themselves having to present, or not paying attention to notice if your face is red or your words stumble. The only person paying full attention is probably your professor. Take a deep breath, focus on your points, and just do your best. Even if you mess up a little, finishing the presentation is a huge win. It feels sooo much better after it’s all over!

Step 4: Take Care of Yourself

Finals aren’t just about memorizing facts; they’re about surviving your own life. My must-dos:

  • Sleep: Even a little helps.
  • Eat: Protein, fruit, and honestly, whatever you want; treat yourself!
  • Move: Walk, stretch, mini dance breaks, anything to reset your brain.
  • Unplug: Step away from social media and group chats for a few minutes

Step 5: Celebrate the Tiny Wins

Even small victories deserve a mini celebration, answering one question right, finishing a study guide, or surviving a presentation without crying. Finals week is basically a marathon, and every little win matters.

Finals week with anxiety is rough, no sugarcoating it. But deep breaths, smart study moves, self-care, and a little humor (plus imagining your classmates in their underwear) can get you through. Coffee, snacks, and one step at a time. You got this!

Hi! My name is Jenna Thomas and I’m a senior at Rowan University majoring in Law and Justice. I’ve always been drawn to helping others, and over the past few years, I’ve grown especially interested in advocacy work with victims and children. After graduation, I hope to take this passion and turn it into a career where I can make a real difference in people’s lives.

On campus, I’ve been able to grow a lot as a leader. This semester, I serve as Vice President of Alpha Sigma Tau, where I get to work alongside an amazing group of women. Being in a sorority has taught me so much about teamwork, planning events, and supporting others, but it has also given me friendships and memories that I’ll carry with me well beyond college. Balancing school and leadership has pushed me to stay focused while still finding ways to enjoy the experience.

Outside of academics, I love to keep life fun and adventurous. I love to go to the gym, hike, travel and hang with friends. I enjoy exploring new places, trying new things, and finding little ways to make every day exciting. For me, life is all about balance working hard toward my goals while also making time to enjoy the little things!
