How To Make Completing Your New Year’s Resolution Easy in San Marcos

Every time New Years comes around, everybody has a resolution they say they want to stick to. Most people have goals like eating healthier or working out more. However, a lot of the time those resolutions get discarded within a couple weeks into the new year because keeping up with a brand new goal can be difficult to incorporate into everyday life.

As a Texas State University (TXST) student living in the city of San Marcos, Texas, it is beneficial that there are an amount of options provided that cater to living a healthy lifestyle.

If the traditional act of lifting weights and working out doesn’t appeal to you, don’t fret! The Student Recreation Center (Rec.) located on campus at TXST has alternative and fun ways to stay active during the school year. As soon as you walk into the Rec., you see the rock climbing wall, the pool, and the courts, but there are even more hidden resources they provide to keep their students fit.

For example, the Rec. offers a membership program called, “Group Exercise.” This program has a one time fee of $40 per semester to become a member and includes numerous different types of classes led by a student instructor to help make participants feel comfortable while getting a good sweat in. They provide classes such as yoga, zumba, HIIT, and my personal favorite, the cycling class.

When I discovered this program, I was ecstatic because I was able to stay fit with a variety of new exercises I could try. The first time I tried the spin class, I was immediately hooked. It is a very uplifting environment, with the lights dimmed, accented by black light and loud music to keep pushing me harder. I felt so refreshed after each class. This program is inclusive to people who could be too nervous to go to the gym but still want to try new things to stay fit.

If going to the Student Recreation Center isn’t your cup of tea either, then the city of San Marcos has plenty of options that can help cater towards staying fit.

Sewell Park is a great option that is located on campus and the San Marcos River water stays at a constant 72 degrees fahrenheit year round. It is a great option for those who want to go for a swim and burn calories, while also having fun.

Additionally, there are many scenic hiking trails in the San Marcos area, including the Purgatory Creek Natural Area and the Spring Creek Natural Area. Both of these parks are less than a 10 minute drive from campus and have clearly marked, multiple mile long trails that show off all types of wildlife, beautfiul untouched nature, and the hills that San Marcos has to offer.

2024 is the year to successfully complete your New Year’s resolution of staying fit. You got this!
