Hey Barbies! Halloween is fast approaching, and I’m here to help my fellow Barbie lovers out that are still searching for ideas. With the cultural sensation of the Barbie movie still fresh in the hearts, minds, and social media posts of many, I think Barbie should and will be a popular piece of media to source Halloween costumes. Not only was Barbie hilarious and represented a positively refreshing message for the young woman of the world, but its wide range of iconic and glamorous looks is evident and undeniable. When I wasn’t dying laughing our bawling my eyes out, I was mesmerized by the many unique outfits worn by the characters. Every single character in the Barbie movie was serving looks, full stop.
All things considered, I’m willing to wager that there will be a lot of Barbies out and about this Halloween (for a good reason!). Arguably, two of Margot Robbie’s Barbie’s most recognizable outfits, the cute retro roller-skating outfit and the all-out pink cowgirl outfit, will be the most worn Barbie-inspired costumes this upcoming Halloween, rightfully so!
While you should be confident to choose these if you want (just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s bad!), I wanted to offer some other equally as iconic and deserving looks that I think might hit the streets this spooky season.
- Undercover Barbie
One of the most iconic scenes in Barbie, and I know that’s hard to pick, in my opinion, is the sequence in which Barbie and crew venture on a covert mission to take back Barbieland from the Kens. For this look, all you need is a pink boilersuit and any pink sunglasses! The functionality of a boilersuit is so appealing — depending on what suit you choose, you could have a decent number of pockets to store your phone, wallet, and, of course, candy! So not only are you wearing a cute and recognizable costume from the movie, but you also don’t have to sacrifice any functionality in the process!
- Mermaid Barbie
The internationally loved English-Albanian singer Dua Lipa not only sang her catchy single, “Dance the Night Away,” which was played during the iconic dance sequence, but she also made a highly anticipated cameo in Barbie as a friendly blue mermaid. Dua Lipa fans and Barbie fans alike looking for a stand-out costume should definitely consider replicating the sparkly blue mermaid this year. Who doesn’t want to fulfill all of our childhood dreams and be a mermaid?
To complete this look, you will need a sparkly fake mermaid tail (don’t worry, this one is like a maxi skirt, so you can still walk in it!), a cute sparkly cropped tank to mimic mermaid scales and a blue wig!
- Weird Barbie
This costume idea creates a fun opportunity for both the creative people out there and anyone else who had first-hand experience in creating their own “Weird Barbie” growing up (don’t lie, we all had one!). With the base of a pink ruffle dress, you can go wild with fabric markers and paint to scribble all over the dress and truly make the weirdest, most creative Barbie ever! Similar to actress and comedian Kate Mckinnon’s Weird Barbie, you can create whatever funky design your heart desires! Add some face paint, a wacky wig, and some out-of-this-world crazy shoes (i.e., a crazy pattern in the most outlandish color, of course!), and you’ve made yourself your very own weird Barbie that could be lying on the floor of any girl’s room right now!
- Supreme Court Barbie
If you are actually in your law school girl era or aspiring to be, this is the perfect costume for you! All you need is a black graduation robe, a white lace collar, and a gavel! Sadly, and very surprisingly, there are no pink gavels on Amazon (what!?), so you will have to find some spray paint to complete this iconic, judicial look! You will undoubtedly be serving both the Supreme Court and this look if you choose it.
- 60s Barbie
One of the most underrated outfits in the movie, in my opinion, was Robbie’s blue 1960s dress, which she can be seen in one of the shots in Weird Barbie’s Dreamhouse. This outfit was a little harder to find exact matches to, but if you can pull it off, this could be both a cute and subtle homage to both the 1960s and one of this decade’s most iconic movies. You will need a blue and white collar dress, white retro earrings, and a white satin bow to complete this look!
- Pink Gingham Barbie
One of the first looks the audience saw Barbie in was a beautiful pink gingham print dress. Like the option before this, those who don’t even know the Barbie movie can appreciate this look as it is a beautiful 1950s-themed dress that is sure to bring awe and admiration to anyone who chooses it. This option not only includes a beautiful replicate of the pink 1950s dress but also the earrings, bow, and belt Robbie wears. With this outfit, you are sure to make a grand and fashionable entrance to anywhere, just like Barbie did!
- Gynecologist Appointment Barbie
This one is for anyone looking for a more lowkey, “iykyk” look sure to make anyone who knows what you are referring to laugh their heads off when they realize. In the iconic final scene of the movie, Barbie, in her business casual attire, after being hyped up by Sasha, Gloria, and her husband, walks into what the audience assumes is maybe a very important interview or first day at an equally important business office. Instead, once she reaches the front desk, Barbie says she is there for her gynecologist appointment. It is the very last word of the movie, and it hilariously drops right into the ending credits with Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s “Barbie World” hit song in the background.
The pieces you need to complete this subtle look that only those in the know will know are probably already in your closet! You will need a plain white shirt, blue jeans, and a beige blazer. Then, if you want to be super movie-accurate, you could also find or purchase a cute pink bag and a pair of Birkenstocks to complete the look.
Anyone who is on the joke will surely remember it for a long time!
- ‘This Barbie is a…’ Barbie
Last but certainly not least, is an idea that pays homage to one of the main takeaways of the movie itself — you can be whoever and whatever you want to be! In true Barbie fashion, there is nothing better than sticking true to you! Similar to a popular TikTok trend this summer where users showed off their hopeful future careers with the tagline “This Barbie is a…” this Halloween, you can take pride in your future career interest and dress up as whatever it is! This costume idea allows you to showcase to the world who you are and what you are passionate about. All you need is your own career costume and a sign with the “This Barbie is a…” phrase you can carry around.
There you have it! I hope these fashion-forward looks make an appearance this coming Halloween. Barbie is anyone you want her to be, from a doctor to a lawyer, an astronaut, a teacher, or even you! Embrace your inner child this year and use these costume ideas as inspiration to be the most fashionable Barbie in Barbieland.
