Six months after Hulu released the Season 3 finale of Only Murders In The Building and confirmed that the hit drama will be returning for a fourth season, the official release date for the upcoming season has finally been announced. The series follows a Manhattan, true crime podcast trio (played by Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short) as they aim to investigate murders in their own apartment building, the Arconia. While Season 3 wrapped up one case, it ended in an unexpected cliffhanger, so fans should probably buckle up for a lot more action in Season 4.
So far, each season of Only Murders In The Building has followed a different killing, either of someone living in Arconia or closely associated with its residents. Season 3’s victim might have had the tightest connection to the podcasting trio. When and how can fans watch Season 4?
Season 4 of Only Murders In The Building will premiere on Hulu on August 27 and pick up right where the previous one left off, where Charles, Oliver, and Mabel wrestle with the shocking events surrounding the death of Charles’ stunt double and friend, Sazz Pataki.
Questioning whether Sazz or Charles was the intended victim, the trio’s investigation leads them all the way to Los Angeles as a Hollywood studio is preparing a film about the Only Murders podcast. As they race back to New York, the trio embark on an even more epic journey — traversing their building’s courtyard to delve into the twisted lives of Arconia’s West Tower residents.
In addition to the storyline for Season 4, showrunner, John Hoffman, previously told The Hollywood Reporter, “I think the idea of what you create is a thing you put out in the world, and sometimes you can’t be prepared for what the repercussions of the world does with your thing, and how they feel about it.” Properly referring to the film, he also said, “The podcast and everything that’s happened, and what it all means, and what it could have been meaning all along, that’s a really interesting world to look at for those three who stepped in that way.”
Who will return to the cast, and will any new characters be introduced?
Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin) will be returning for Season 4, this time to find the killer of Charles’ friend Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch).
Along with Gomez, Martin, and Short, some of Hollywood’s most star-studded actors are set to make appearances in Season 4, including Meryl Streep as Oliver’s love interest, Loretta, Jane Lynch as Sazz Pataki, Michael Cyril Creighton as Howard Morris, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph as detective Donna Williams.
As for new characters, they will be played by Eugene Levy, Melissa McCarthy, Eva Longoria, Zach Galifianakis, Molly Shannon, Kumail Nanjiani, and Richard Kind.
Was Sazz the intended target of the murder?
This is where things get a bit tricky. Sazz, who did stunts for Charles on his cop show, was in his apartment and dressed to look like him when she died. As for who would want to kill Charles and why, showrunner John Hoffman told Hollywood Reporter that there was “a lot of exploring to do down that road.” However, he also noted that the victim’s close connection to one of the podcasting trio was “very helpful” for the show and Sazz’s character development. Executive producer Jess Rosenthal initially suggested this plot point, which Hoffman embraced as both “perfect” and “awful.”
So what was Sazz hiding when she died?
As Season 4 delves deeper into Sazz and her secrets, fans are especially curious about one in particular that she died with. She was trying to tell it to Charles throughout season 3. Plus, a message written in blood was found next to Sazz’ dead body. Hoffman isn’t exactly sure where the show will go with that message quite yet since he wanted to keep his “options open” while writing the script for Season 3. Whatever this secret is, I have a feeling that it’s tied to Sazz’s murderer’s motive, and the reveal will make me gasp like no other.
