Reading has always been my favourite past time, my escape from reality, a trustworthy source of amusement, which is why it was a shock to find myself in a reading slump. For almost a year I simply couldn’t find the motivation to pick up a book and start reading. And when I got started, I couldn’t find the motivation to finish it. I never saw of face of the book even before I could finish the first chapter.
The experience of not being able to finish a book and enjoy it was heart wrenching. It is something I wish no other bibliophile should go through, but if any of you ever fall into a reading slump, here are a few tips that got me back to enjoying my books.
Take a break. I know its not the most sound advice but sometimes its good to take a break from doing the things you love. So allow yourself to sit back and take a break from reading. I let myself binge on tv shows and anime. Truly got to catch up on shows the real world keeps raving about. You could always replace this with hanging out with your friends, going on walks or pursuing a hobby you enjoy. If this break is all it takes you to get back to reading, then it’s a reminder that sometimes a little pause is all we need to reignite our love for books. But if you are like me and need a little extra push to get out of a reading slump, don’t worry there are plenty of tips to help you get back.
I was refreshed after the break from reading but that wasn’t enough. I wasn’t much interested in the books I used to read, so I changed gears to try out a new genre. I shifted away from my comfy sci-fi, fantasy, young adult and romance novels to something more thought provoking. That did the trick. I was quite enthusiastic to lose track of time and read in the middle of the night.
The other thing that eased my transition was first to set a short daily reading goal of just 10 mins each day to gradually get back into my routine. It was difficult at first, not just because of my lack of interest but due to tight schedules but I made sure to finish my daily quota right before bed. Finally, it is crucial to find yourself that cozy spot with the perfect setting to get lost in a book. For me, it was right under my warm blanket, and let me tell you, it was pure bliss!
A reading slump can happen to anyone but it doesn’t have to last forever. Taking a break, trying a new genre and setting an attainable goal can be few things you could do to rediscover your joy for reading. A good book has the power to transport you to new worlds, introduce you to unforgettable characters, and make you feel all the feels. So keep on reading and let the magic of books continue to inspire and delight you!
Happy reading!!!
