Happy October everyone! October is the perfect month for watching movies. The weather is starting to cool down, our sweaters and hoodies are coming out, and Halloween is around the corner! Here’s a list of movies that I highly recommend watching this month.
Hocus Pocus
Starting the list off with a classic , Hocus Pocus! Hocus Pocus came out in 1993. It stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters, a group of evil witches. The sisters, who were trapped in a haunted house, are accidentally released by a teengager and his sister. They cause havoc throughout the town and the teenager must fix what he’s done. It’s a super entertaining movie to watch. For years, I avoided watching it until one night I gave in due to boredom. To this day, I still remember the night I watched it and how it made me feel.
Practical Magic
Practical Magic was released in 1998 starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. The movie is about two sisters going through the struggles of a family curse placed on the women in their family. They avoided witchcraft most of their lives because of this and because of the passing of their parents, until they must use their magic in order to get out of a difficult situation they put themselves in. Practical Magic is one of my favorite movies. It’s funny, witchy, and I appreciate the family values embedded in the story.
Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween
If you’re looking for a good laugh, this is the movie for you! This 2016 film stars Tyler Perry, Cassi Davis, and Diamond White. Tiffany, a high school student, disobeys her father and sneaks out of the house to go to a fraternity party with her friends. However, Madea and the cops crash the party. Tiffany and her friends, upset about what happened, decide to prank and scare Madea.
Corpse Bride
This animated Tim Burton film is one of my favorite movies to watch this time of year. It was released in 2005 with the voices of Johnny Depp and Emily Watson. It tells the story of a young couple’s arranged marriage. However, things go wrong after the groom decides to practice his wedding vows in the forest. From there he ends up in the land of the dead and must find a way to come back to the land of the living to make it to his wedding. The symbolism in this movie is probably why I love it so much.
Halloweentown
A Disney classic! Halloweentown is the first movie I think about when it comes to Halloween movies. It came out in 1998 with Kimberly J. Brown, Debbie Reynolds, and Judith Hoag. The movie is about a 13 year old girl finding out she’s a witch and so is her mom and grandma. She’s ready to become a witch and follow her birthright. However, her mother wants her to stay mortal.
Twitches
Another Disney Halloween classic starring Tia Mowry and Tamera Mowry. This movie released in 2005 tells the story of a set of twins, who finally reunite after birth on their 21st birthday. However, to their surprise, they’re witches who have the power to defeat the darkness in another realm. I watched this movie growing up. I love rewatching it especially around this time of year
Death Becomes Her
Personally, this is one of my favorite movies of all time and I don’t hear it being talked about enough. Death Becomes Her stars Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, and Bruce Willis. It came out in 1992. It’s about a writer who loses her fiancé to a celebrity actress and a longtime friend. She ends up in a psychiatric hospital but after years pass, she wants revenge on her ex best friend and ex fiancé.
