It’s the beginning of a new school year, which means that some students are entering university as freshmen while others are preparing for their last year. Before the clock runs out on your time at college, it is important to take advantage of everything that you have at your disposal as a college student.
One of these advantages is having the opportunity to qualify for special discounts or subscription plans. There are a few big deals that are widely known of such as “Apple Education” and “Prime Student,” but there are many more deals that companies specifically offer to college students that are underused.
- Spotify Student Premium
Spotify offers students attending university a discounted rate for Spotify Premium at only $4.99 a month! Along with this, Spotify is throwing in a free subscription to ad-supported Hulu and SHOWTIME.
Compared to the regular Spotify Premium monthly cost of $10, this is an incredible deal because you also get access to two streaming platforms for no extra cost. As a student who has Spotify Premium, I would suggest applying for this program on day one as it will save you half of your Spotify monthly bill as well as provide you with another streaming service for “free.”
2. AMC
Do want to go see a movie but you’re a student trying to stick to a weekly budget? No problem: if you are a college student, you can receive a discount at participating AMC theaters when you present your student ID.
Going to the movies with my friends was one of our favorite activities on freshman year because we could go off campus and escape the college town atmosphere for a few hours. All of my movie tickets have been around $6, which makes the experience a lot more enjoyable as it is financially feasible.
3. Peloton
Peloton is a fitness company that designs and sells spin bikes as well as treadmills. On those equipments, people can workout to pre-recorded guided sessions with instructors or follow along live classes.
Perhaps you weren’t one of the thousands of people who bought a Peloton spin bike in the middle of the pandemic like the rest of the world, but you don’t actually need the physical bike or treadmill to follow along the classes.
Peloton has an app with all of its content downloaded onto it including: spin classes, guided treadmill runs, outdoor running, yoga, palates, dance, strength exercises and meditation. With the Peloton bike or treadmill, the app is included for free; however, you can also purchase a monthly subscription to the app for $12 a month.
The company offers students in college a 50 percent discount on this monthly cost, which lowers the cost to the same as one Starbucks drink a month.
I use the Peloton app at the gym and have found it to be incredibly helpful having a trainer in my ear to push me through a workout. While not everyone needs this type of motivation or guidance in the gym, I would suggest it to someone who wants to exercise but is not sure where to start.
4. Amazon Prime Student
In case you were unaware, Amazon offers a subscription plan called Amazon Prime Student that offers students a yearly cost of $70. Compared to the regular Prime price of $139 per year, it is a must have, especially considering how many Amazon items students will order during their time in college.
Additionally, Amazon Prime Student includes further deals such as textbook discounts, Amazon Music for a discounted price, six months of LinkedIn Premium for free and more.
This is one of the most overlooked deals because students are unaware of how often they will use Amazon. When considering whether or not you need to have an Amazon Prime account, think about how long it takes for an Amazon package to arrive to your house without Prime fast shipping or how annoying it can be to constantly ask permission from your parents to use their Amazon Prime account to buy something.
Whether you choose to take advantage of these deals or not, it is always important to be aware of ways to save. As college students we are provided opportunities to save money in ways that we won’t be able to once we graduate.
