We’re already two weeks into September and the music scene has blessed our ears from both industry heavy hitters and rising artists. Here’s what you should be listening to from these new releases:
- “age/sex/location” by Ari Lennox
The queen of strong vibrato and hilarious Instagram Live stories returns to the music scene for her sophomore album, “age/sex/location”. Inspired by the technology of the 90s and 2000s, Lennox takes us back in time all while singing songs of topics known all too well: love, lust, and healing. Enlisting the help of artists such as Lucky Daye, Chloë, and Summer Walker, “age/sex/location” is the more developed sister to her debut album, “Shea Butter Baby,” but with a more mature approach to facing adversity in love.
2. “EASIER TO BE ANGRY” by A.G. Sully
Rising artist A.G. Sully gets open and honest on this heartbreaking single on losing a person you thought would be around for longer. “It’s easier to be angry than face the truth,” Sully croons, a sentiment that is tough to face, but a blessing when fully understood. There’s no telling on whether or not this song is a piece of a bigger puzzle, but it shines on its own regardless.
3. “The Forever Story” by J.I.D
Following up his debut album, “The Never Story,” the East Atlanta native returns to continue this tale. A long-awaited project from the Dreamville artist, J.I.D’s latest album includes a a long list of star-studded features, including labelmates EARTHGANG and Ari Lennox as well as hip-hop legends Yasiin Bey and Lil Wayne. From lighthearted tracks to intricate stories of his family and loved ones, J.I.D shows that a chapter can end, but the story doesn’t have to.
4. “Jesus Freak Lighter” by Blood Orange
The lead single from singer Dev Hynes’ upcoming EP is reminiscient of early 2000s dream rock, with a headbopping drum loop and wistful background vocals to boot. Listen now!
5. “GREENZONE 108” by Greentea Peng
A prominent voice in the new era of psychedelic soul, Greentea Peng is a fresh voice to the streets. A consistent campaigner for change in systems plaguing society, the UK soulstress continues to touch on themes from her debut, “MAN MADE,” on self love and preservation as well as being aware of the happenings of the outside world. Her unique sound and look is truly infectious.
