Texas Lonestars Reach Out with Project Princess

Friday, March 11, 2011

For most Collegiettes™, your high school life is a collection of memories glorified on your dorm room corkboard or framed by your bedside table. Pictures of you in your reveled cheerleading uniform, performing in the band, debate team or just carousing with friends at the pep rally represent a subtle glimmer of who you were before college transplanted you to West Campus. However, almost every college woman feels a tug at her heartstrings when she reflects on the day in high school when the entirety of the day was devoted to her dress, cuticles and spanking new heels: your high school prom. For the Texas Lonestars at the University of Texas, this day is their devoted, annual mission.

“The best part of our philanthropy is that Project Princess is so hands on," said Project Princess chair and business honors finance student Amanda Snyder. "Texas Lonestars have the opportunity to personally help each girl go through the process of picking out the perfect dress, shoes and accessories, to make her feel like a princess.”

?The Texas Lonestars is a service group of college women at UT who annually dedicate themselves to Project Princess, a mission to provide central Texas underprivileged young womenwith the opportunity to experience the once-in-a-lifetime magic of their high school prom without having to worry about the financial obligations the event requires . To secure enough donations and other resources, such as goodie bags featuring BCBG products, the Lonestar ladies held a Donation Day Feb. 26 and a benefit concert at the Parish downtown March 3.

On March 27, the Texas Lonestars will host their Boutique Day where organization members individually serve as personal shoppers for the participants as each prom prospect chooses from gently worn dresses and takes home a new pair of shoes and accessories to wear on their special night. According to Snyder, this year is different in that the Lonestars will have a greater selection of plus-sized dresses as well as a broader selection of shoes. This year each girl will also be sent home with a unique framed photograph of herself with her personal shopper to capture the special day.

Project Princess is the heartbeat of the Texas Lonestars. Undoubtedly the hearts of the participants are filled with joy and excitement, and the ladies of the Texas Lonestars also have the memory of making a resounding impact in the life of others simply by crowning them princess for a day.
