StO-Style: Fashion Focus – Flannel

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Hi fashionistas!

Let’s focus on flannel:

Worn by 17th-century farmers, 19th-century railroad workers, and fashionistas today, flannel shirts have been a true fashion staple through the years. Flannel has moved from being a workman’s shirt – made to hold up in the natural elements – to a stylish fashionista’s favorite fall and winter fashion piece. Flannel is versatile, durable and warm – perfect for any wardrobe. Nothing says cozy, rugged and effortless like a flannel shirt.

Here are some ways for you to make the most out of your flannel shirt this season!

Flannel: Organically Worn

Sometimes the simplest way to wear something turns out to be the best. Throw your flannel shirt over a plain tee, buttoned or unbuttoned, with jeans and moccasins, Converse or boots. This is an effortless, cohesive and put-together look that gives off a laid-back vibe. Whenever you can’t seem to find that perfect outfit in the morning, a simple flannel will never fail you.

Flannel: With a Vest

With the chilly weather upon us, throwing a puffy vest over your flannel is another great option. This gives off a rugged look and pairs well with boots and distressed denim. It is simple, yet classic. Layering with a vest is the perfect way to keep warm while also adding dimension to your look. All you need after that is a cup of hot chocolate and a warm fire to cozy up to!

Flannel: With a Skirt

To add a more girly-vibe to the tomboyishness of the flannel shirt, try pairing it with a skirt. This combination is the perfect way to counterbalance the vibe of each piece and create a cohesive look. The contrast between the masculinity of the top and the girly-ness of the skirt makes for a visually interesting outfit. Good skirts to pair with flannel are a bandage skirt, a leather skirt, a denim skirt or a pencil skirt (with the flannel tucked-in).

Flannel: Over a Graphic Tee

Mixing a print with another print is a good way to add visual interest to your outfit. You can easily accomplish this by layering a flannel shirt over a graphic tee… think concert tee, graphic tee with a simple word or phrase or a tee with an image. When layering, try to mix colors that complement each other, or pick out a color from your flannel shirt and find a graphic tee that matches. This look also adds an edgy-vibe to your flannel shirt outfit!

Flannel: With Leather

When dressing, I love to mix textures. Pairing your flannel shirt with leather is a perfect way to do this. The softness of the flannel is contrasted with and balanced by the structure and clean lines of the leather. A leather jacket over the flannel shirt would look great, or you could try a leather skirt. Have fun playing around with contrasting textures!

Flannel: Under a Sweater

Looking to stay extra warm and cozy this fall and winter? Try layering a flannel shirt under a chunky sweater. Pick an accent color from your flannel and use it to guide your sweater choice. Neutral tones work well for layering. You could also layer the flannel under a cardigan. To complete the flannel and cardigan look, roll up the sleeves a bit so the cuffs of the flannel peek out and add some fun bracelets.

Flannel: With Accessories

Flannel by itself is wonderful, but adding that extra “oomph” makes things even more exciting. So, try pairing your flannel shirt with a statement necklace layered over the collar. You could also wear a chunky scarf over the flannel. It will keep you warm and add dimension to your look. Or wear your glasses! This adds a visual statement and is a good way to dress head-to-toe. Don’t forget about makeup either! Adding a bright lip color is the perfect way to tie in a subtle girly-vibe to your flannel look.

In the fall and winter, a flannel shirt can be a fashionista’s best friend. So, try cozying-up to some of these flannel shirt ideas this season!
