13 Feelings We Get During Television’s Winter Hiatus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

A moment that’s even worse than finding out fetch is not going to happen is finding out that all your favorite TV shows are going on hiatus. That’s right: the dreaded winter finale. As it turns out, it is not just your waistline that has gone up and down during last month’s festivities. It is your emotions, too. So, in honor of their return, here’s a little insight into what all TV junkies feel while coping with the temporary loss of those beloved small screen lineups.

Devastation: So many unanswered questions! Who is dead? Who is alive? And are those two back together or not? As the credits role you can’t help but feel utterly speechless at the thought of having to wait another TWO months for the plot to unfold.

Mourning: You were just about to tune in to Scandal at 9pm like always when you realize it’s just a rerun. At this point, January seems so far away and now you’re suddenly lost in your feelings.

Nostalgia: Well, maybe if you just binge watch the entire series from start to finish, the sting of losing it won’t feel so bad and before you know it, hiatus is over! Maybe…

Disloyalty: Look, forget this. There’s a month and a half left so why not thrust yourself into a show you’ve never had the time to fan out for before? There’s plenty of adoration to go around and the best way to get over something is to get under something else.

Guilt: Still, something doesn’t seem quite right and this Top Chef marathon is not cutting it. Now you, understand: there’s just no filling this void.

Preoccupied: Television is great, but movies have a place in your heart, too. What better way to distract yourself than with time dedicated to this year’s Oscar-nominated pictures? Those red carpets are everything to you and the Fashion Police specials? EPIC.

Excitement: Everything is about to go back to normal and though it’s actually been alright these last couple of months, there’s nothing like ignoring your homework, grabbing some popcorn, and watching some late night drama.

Giddiness: Two hours before the premiere, you’re going a little crazy. You’ve got the shakes, the giggles, and the attention span of a squirrel right about now. On the bright side, your favorite sweater could spontaneously catch fire and it wouldn’t ruin your day. The view looks pretty great from Cloud 9.

Suspense: It’s all too much! Your anxiety is kicking into high gear. Dude, you have got to get a grip!

Victory: It’s time! Shhhhhhhhhhhh! Do not call me. Do not text me. Do not skype me. For the next hour, I am dead to you.

Disappointment: Of course the entire episode was filled to the brim with suspicious undertones and a few telling glances. And to top it all off, you have even more questions than you did before. Ugh, forget it. You wonder, what’s up with The Bachelor

Understanding: Who are you kidding? You can’t wait to tune in next week. You missed this weekly routine to bits and if they want to milk this storyline just a little bit longer, that’s okay with you. Slow and steady wins the race, anyway.

Love: Sometimes you really don’t know which means more to you: a semester abroad or five more seasons of Shameless. Whatever the case, you are totally hooked and that’s all that matters. Now, onto the summer premiere of Orange is the New Black…
