Four Reasons Why Black Friday is Overrated

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

Black Friday– the one day of the year devoted to waking up extra early to wait in lines for items and clothes that will probably be gone by the time you reach them. Sounds just lovely, right? For some people, nothing gets them more in the holiday spirit than this day. For me? Well, I call BS. Here is why:

1. Sleep!!

I don’t know about you other college gals, but I value the sleep that I can get. And while I am on a holiday, I definitely lack the motivation to wake up at the crack of dawn for anything other than maybe another piece of pecan pie.

2. Technology, folks.

Technology is a good thing. It helps us stay in touch with our loved ones, learn more about the world, and entertain us. Most importantly, however, is the gift of online shopping that it provides us. We are in the days where one is just a *click* away from ordering the dress that Gigi Hadid was wearing on her way to dinner last Friday night. This means that online retailers have realized the importance of making their Black Friday sales available to anyone with access to the glorious world wide web. (Which, if you’re reading this, is you! Go treat yourself.)

3. The food baby.

Welcome, Winter Body! Oh, how I’ve missed you. While I do enjoy the extra fluff to keep me warm this season, the food baby that my Thanksgiving meal gave me is still protruding from underneath my sweater. Fortunately, the entirety of Friday can be spent at home watching movies and taking care of the leftovers from the big meal. This obviously conflicts with the beloved shopping event, but hey– that’s why the internet was invented.

4. Baby, it’s cold outside.

You know where it’s not cold? Underneath your blankets or by the fire with a cup of hot cocoa. Skip the long lines spent shivering and stay home instead. Or better yet, go to your local coffee shop and stay warm with a chai latte and toasted muffin. There are so many ways to spend a chilly winter morning that don’t involve freezing your fingers away!
